Nabokov signs deal to play in Russia

San Jose, Calif. -- Former San Jose Sharks goaltender Evgeni Nabokov confirmed Wednesday he has signed a contract to play hockey in Russia.

Nabokov told ESPN.com he has signed a four-year deal with SKA St. Petersburg of the Kontinental Hockey League.

"It was an interesting decision, a hard decision for me, but I'm also excited right now," Nabokov told the Web site.

Nabokov, an unrestricted free agent, made $6 million last season with the Sharks, backstopping them to the NHL Western Conference Finals before they fell in a four-game sweep to eventual Stanley Cup winners Chicago Blackhawks.

San Jose, Calif. -- The San Jose Sharks will let longtime goaltender Evgeni Nabokov leave as a free agent, General Manager Doug Wilson said Tuesday.

Nabokov, 34, earned $6 million last year in his 10th season with the Sharks, who advanced to the NHL Western Conference Finals but lost to the eventual NHL champion Chicago Blackhawks.

"We've made the decision to go in a different direction on the goaltender," Wilson told the San Jose Mercury News. "Nabby has been outstanding for the organization and has been a big part of our successes."

Nabokov has long been considered one of the NHL's elite and most durable goalies. In his career with San Jose, he compiled a 293-215-29 record with a 2.39 goals against average.

NHL: San Jose 5, Pittsburgh 0

San Jose, Calif. -- San Jose goaltender Evgeni Nabokov stopped all 27 shots Saturday as the Sharks shut out the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-0.

Nabokov earned his second shutout of the year while sparking the Sharks to their seventh win in eight games in a lop-sided affair in which Joe Pavelski, Dan Boyle and Manny Malhotra each notched a goal and an assist.

The Sharks' other goals came from Dany Heatley and Jamie McGinn.

San Jose's stifling defense kept Penguins star Sidney Crosby from scoring in the fourth straight game Crosby has gone without a point.

NHL: San Jose 3, Columbus 2 (SO)

Columbus, Ohio -- Dan Boyle's shootout goal Wednesday gave San Jose a 3-2 victory over Columbus that extended the Sharks' win streak to six games.

Boyle fired a wrist shot into the upper right corner of the net. Sharks goalie Evgeni Nabokov then blocked a Rick Nash shot to secure the win.

Dany Heatley and Joe Thornton posted the other San Jose goals and Nabokov ended up with 26 saves.

Nash and Jason Chimera scored for the Blue Jackets and Anton Stralman added two assists.

Columbus goalie Steve Mason was credited with 36 saves.

NHL: San Jose 3, Colorado 1

San Jose, Calif. -- Evgeni Nabokov allowed only a shorthanded goal in the third period and made 23 saves Friday, carrying San Jose to a 3-1 victory over Colorado.

Colorado had won four in a row and set a franchise record for October victories with 10, but the Avalanche could not solve Nabokov.

The San Jose goaltender won for the fourth time in five starts and helped boost the Sharks past Los Angeles into the lead in the Pacific Division.

Ryane Clowe put San Jose in front for good, scoring his first goal of the season with 6 seconds remaining in the second period.

Dany Heatley's ninth goal of the year gave San Jose a 2-0 lead 3:59 into the third, after which Matt Duchene broke up Nabokov's bid for a shutout.

NHL: San Jose 2, Los Angeles 1 (SO)

San Jose, Calif. -- Dany Heatley and Ryane Clowe scored during a six-round shootout Wednesday, bringing the San Jose Sharks a 2-1 victory over Los Angeles.

San Jose moved into a tie with the Kings for the top spot in the Pacific Division.

Jonathan Quick of the Kings and Evgeni Nabokov of the Sharks both gave up a goal in the second period and were otherwise perfect until the shootout.

Michal Handzus scored for Los Angeles to open the shootout and Heatley kept the Sharks alive with a goal in the third round. After two misses for each side, Clowe produced the game-winner.

The Sharks captured their third straight win and ended a four-game Los Angeles winning streak. It was the first overtime loss of the year for the Kings.

NHL: San Jose 7, New York Rangers 2

New York, Oct. 19: Devin Setoguchi scored twice during a stretch of six unanswered goals Monday and the San Jose Sharks cooled off the New York Rangers 7-2.

The Rangers had won seven straight games after a season-opening loss to Pittsburgh and opened a 2-0 lead against the Sharks.

San Jose then took over, tying the game by the end of the first period and taking a 5-2 lead after two.

Setoguchi scored back-to-back goals in the second period to run his season total to seven. Patrick Marleau also scored his seventh goal of the year by producing San Jose's last score of the game with 1:55 to play in the third.

NHL: Washington 4, San Jose 1

Washington, Oct. 15: Alex Ovechkin scored twice in the span of 28 seconds of the second period Thursday, boosting Washington to a 4-1 win over San Jose.

The Capitals ended a four-game losing streak that came on the heels of two consecutive victories to open the season.

The win was tempered by the loss of goaltender Jose Theodore to an undisclosed injury. Theodore played the first period, giving up one goal on 13 shots, but was not on the ice at the start of the second. Semyon Varlamov replaced Theodore and stopped all 15 shots over the remainder of the contest.

Washington defeated San Jose for the first time in 12 tries, a stretch of games played over 10 years.

NHL: Phoenix 1, San Jose 0 (SO)

San Jose, Calif., Oct. 13: Lauri Korpikoski scored the game-winning goal Monday in his first NHL shootout attempt to hand the Phoenix Coyotes a 1-0 win over San Jose.

Peter Mueller also scored for Phoenix during the shootout and Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 26 shots to help the Coyotes break a two-game losing streak.

Evgeni Nabokov made 30 saves for the Sharks, who came into the game with two straight wins.

NHL: San Jose 6, Columbus 3

San Jose, Calif., Oct. 9: Dany Heatley scored two of San Jose's four second-period goals Thursday and finished with a hat trick, pacing the Sharks to a 6-3 victory over Columbus.

The loss by the Blue Jackets left Calgary (4-0) and Atlanta (2-0) as the NHL's only unbeaten teams just a week into the season.

Heatley gave San Jose a 2-1 lead 5:40 into the second period and also scored with 12 seconds left in the stanza to make it 4-2. He added a shorthanded goal 7:08 into the closing period.

Heatley has four goals in four games.

Evgeni Nabokov got the win, stopping 20-of-23 shots.

Steve Mason was removed from the contest after allowing five goals on 20 shots.

Mathieu Garon faced six shots the rest of the way and gave up only Heatley's final goal.

NHL: Los Angeles 6, San Jose 4

Los Angeles, Oct. 7: Third-period goals by Teddy Purcell and Davis Drewiske Tuesday helped the Los Angeles Kings fight off San Jose 6-4.

The Kings had led 4-0 in the second period, but San Jose rallied with two goals in the second and two more early in the third to tie the score 4-4. Purcell scored the decisive goal on a wrister at 14:50 of the third and Drewiske added an insurance goal at 18:41.

Danny Heatley had tied the game at 14:24 on a slapshot through traffic that Kings goalie Jamie Quick likely never saw.

Los Angeles built a 4-0 advantage on a goal by Wayne Simmons at 5:49 of the first period and second-period scores by Ryan Smith, Jack Johnson and Anze Kopitar.
