NBC to air 'William & Kate' special

New York -- NBC says it plans to air "Will & Kate: A Royal Love Story" in honor of British Prince William's recent engagement to Kate Middleton.

The couple are to marry in London next spring or summer, royal officials said Tuesday.

NBC's hourlong "Dateline" special is set for broadcast Wednesday.

The program will take a special look at how the couple met, what drew them to each other and what their modern-day marriage will mean for the British monarchy. It includes interviews with longtime friends and exclusive video of the future princess, NBC said in a news release Tuesday.

Las Vegas -- Karina Smirnoff confirmed her engagement to baseball pitcher Brad Penny and says her future husband popped the question more than a month ago.

The "Dancing With the Stars" contestant told People that Penny got down on one knee at a restaurant and presented her with a 4 1/2 carat diamond ring.

"We kept it quiet because my family is in New York and Brad's family is in Oklahoma so we kind of wanted them to come out and celebrate and be a family first before we let the cat out of the bag," Smirnoff said.

People said Sunday that Smirnoff was showing off the frock this weekend at a party at the tony Tao Las Vegas nightclub. Penny wasn't there, but had a diamond necklace delivered to the event as an apology for his absence.

New York 'UFOs' were escaped balloons

Mount Vernon, N.Y. -- The mysterious objects spotted flying above New York weren't UFOs but balloons that escaped from a teacher's party, a school said.

Officials at Milestone School in Mount Vernon said the objects spotted Wednesday above Manhattan, setting off a flurry of calls to police and the Federal Aviation Administration, were pearl balloons from language arts teacher Andrea Craparo's engagement party, the New York Daily News reported Friday.

"UFO? They're crazy -- those are our balloons!" said Angela Freeman, head teacher at the school. "To me it was the most automatic thing. But it's all over YouTube."

Jordin Sparks starring in 'In The Heights'

New York -- Season 6 "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks is starring as "Nina" in Broadway's "In The Heights" for a limited engagement.

Sparks, 20, was 17 when she won the Fox TV singing competition. She is now taking her cred -- boosted by a platinum album, five Top 20 hits and a Grammy nomination -- to the Great White Way, where she is gracing the stage of the hit musical through Nov. 14.

"The singing is the easy part. It's in the telling of the story and staying in character each day where I learn something different," Sparks told the New York Daily News Saturday.
