Los Angeles -- Ellen DeGeneres said via Twitter Thursday she won't be returning as a judge on "American Idol" next season.

DeGeneres, a comedian and talk-show host, joined "Idol" in its ninth season, but said she decided a couple of months ago not to return for its upcoming 10th.

"Dim the lights ... I've voted myself off American Idol," she tweeted.

"It was hard for me to judge people and sometimes hurt their feelings," she said.

"I am very grateful for the year I had. I am a huge fan of the show and will continue to be."

DeGeneres hosts TBS variety special

Los Angeles -- U.S. talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres says she was happy to headline a fourth variety special for TBS because it allows her to stretch as a performer.

The popular comedienne, who lives in Los Angeles, taped "Ellen's Somewhat Special Special" in Chicago this month. The program is to air Sunday night on the cable television network.

In addition to the funny lady's standup routine, the show is expected to feature Kabuki and magic acts, and a performance by the country band Lady Antebellum.

Asked in the days leading up to the taping how she planned to prepare for the gig, DeGeneres told UPI in a recent phone interview, "Well, I'll have a smoothie in the morning and then I'll do some jumping jacks."

DeGeneres takes over Chicago newscast

Chicago -- Ellen DeGeneres took over NBC Chicago during a live evening newscast as part of the TBS Presents a "Very Funny" Festival: Just for Laughs.

"Ellen surprised local newscasters with a visit to the station and a live appearance on the evening news (Monday)," TBS said in a release Tuesday. "She spent time behind the news desk and gave her own unique weather report."

DeGeneres is in town to tape her fourth variety show for TBS, "Ellen's Somewhat Special Special," on Wednesday.

In a phone interview last week to promote the program, which will air on TBS June 27, DeGeneres hinted she planned to break into a major building in Chicago and shoot a taped piece to air on the special.

DeGeneres: I didn't submit myself for Emmy

Los Angeles -- U.S. television personality Ellen DeGeneres says she didn't submit her name in the Best Talk Show Host Daytime Emmy Award category this year.

DeGeneres won the prize four consecutive years, then lost out last year to the five-woman panel of "The View," the Los Angeles Times said.

"I didn't submit myself for the Best Talk Show Host Emmy this year," DeGeneres said on her Web site Wednesday, the day nominations were announced. "I feel my steroid use gives me an unfair advantage."

No more serious reason for the decision was given, the Times said, however, speculation is that DeGeneres is following in Oprah Winfrey's footsteps and taking her name out of the race because she wants to give others a chance to win.

DeGeneres, Gunn honored by PETA

Norfolk, Va. -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said U.S. TV personalities Ellen DeGeneres and Tim Gunn are PETA's Woman and Man of the Year.

The animal rights group said in a release Wednesday that DeGeneres earned her award for promoting awareness of animal issues on her TV talk show and Web site.

Gunn, a mentor on the TV series "Project Runway," was honored for narrating a PETA video on animal rights violations and for his outspoken opposition to the use of fur.
