African museum to do DNA test on dodo egg

Johannesburg, South Africa -- A South African museum says it has the world's last surviving dodo egg and is preparing to allow DNA testing of the precious exhibit to confirm it.

The flightless dodo became extinct in the mid-17th century after being extensively hunted in its native home of Mauritius by visiting sailors and the dogs and cats they brought on voyages with them, which plundered the birds' nests, The Daily Telegraph reported Friday.

The egg was given to South Africa's East London Museum in 1915 by the great aunt of the museums curator at the time, the British newspaper said. It was given to the aunt by a sea captain who made many trips to Mauritius where he said he found it in a swamp.

Chocolate figurines recalled in Canada

Ottawa -- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning people allergic to egg protein not to consume certain Chocolaterie de l'Ile d'Orleans-brand products.

The CFIA and the Quebec manufacturer say decorated chocolate figurines sold by the company have colored eyes, hearts and flowers that contain undeclared egg protein. The product is sold in clear plastic bags with two labels -- one bearing the name "Chocolaterie de l'Ile d'Orleans" and another listing the type of chocolate, ingredients and a nutritional facts table.

Canada recalls Orion, Lotte biscuit brands

Ottawa -- Canadian health officials are warning people allergic to egg, milk, peanut, seafood, sesame, soy or tree nuts not to consume Orion- and Lotte-brand biscuits.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said the biscuits, manufactured in South Korea, contain allergens that aren't declared on the label. Officials noted that on packages of recalled biscuits, the brand name Orion or Lotte is printed only in the Korean language.

The CFIA said the biscuits are known to have been distributed in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan but might have been distributed nationally.

Officials said consumption of the products might cause a serious or life-threatening reaction in people with allergies to egg, milk, peanut, seafood, sesame, soy or tree nuts.
