FDA says Darvon to be taken off market

Washington -- The manufacturer of painkillers Darvon and Darvocet said it will comply with a U.S. request to take the drugs off the market due to safety concerns.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says new clinical data shows the drug propoxyphene "puts patients at risk of potentially serious or even fatal heart rhythms" and says its risks outweigh the benefits, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

Darvon is propoxyphene alone, and Darvocet combines that ingredient with acetaminophen.

Xanodyne, the maker of the two branded products, says it will pull the drugs from the market.

The FDA said it's asking makers of generic versions to pull their drugs, too.

Man looking for drugs calls Crime Stoppers

Buffalo, N.Y. -- Police in New York state said a wrong number call to the Crime Stoppers hotline by a man seeking drugs led to the arrest of a supplier.

Senior Detective Alan Rozansky of the Erie County Sheriff's Office said he always answers the phone with, "Crime Stoppers," but the man who called at noon Monday apparently didn't hear the identification and said he was looking to buy drugs, WVIB-TV, Buffalo, N.Y., reported Wednesday.

Almost 100 Alzheimer's drugs in research

Washington -- Almost 100 drugs are in clinical trials or under federal review for use in treating Alzheimer's disease, pharmaceutical industry analysts say.

American pharmaceutical companies are researching 98 medicines for dementia, mostly Alzheimer's, a report released Monday by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, the industry's main lobbying organization, said.

All are either in clinical trials or are being reviewed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, PhRMA said.

The work shows a major commitment to Alzheimer's, given that each new medicine costs, on average, more than $1 billion to research and develop, BusinesWire.com reported.
