Cibulkova posts upset win in New Zealand

Auckland -- Dominika Cibulkova's upset victory Wednesday gave her a quarterfinal berth against top-seeded Flavia Pennetta at the ASB Classic in New Zealand.

Cibulkova fought off 11 break points and six double faults en route to a 6-3, 6-4 win over seventh-seeded Aravane Rezai in second-round play. Rezai won nearly as many points on Cibulkova's serve as Cibulkova did but dropped serve five times, including three times in the second set.

Pennetta advanced to the quarterfinals with an efficient 6-2, 6-2 victory over Carla Suarez Navarro. She recorded six service breaks in eight games.

No. 3-seeded Yanina Wickmayer won by the same 6-2, 6-2 score, eliminating Ioana Raluca Olaru, and will go against Kimiko Date Krumm in the quarters.

Safina, Venus advance at Cincy tournament

Cincinnati, Aug. 12: Dinara Safina bounced back after losing the first set Tuesday to beat Roberta Vinci at the Western and Southern Financial Group Women's Open in Cincinnati.

The top-ranked Russian, who was runner-up at the French and Australian Opens, beat her Italian opponent 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 in second-round play at the $2 million event.

Safina racked up 10 double faults in the match, which lasted nearly two hours.

Venus Williams of the United States also advanced Tuesday by dispatching Belarusian Olga Govortsova 6-2, 6-2.
French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova struggled against Czech Lucie Safarova but eventually prevailed 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7-4).
