Swedish feminist party burns $13,000

Visby, Sweden -- Sweden's Feminist Initiative party set fire to $13,000 Tuesday in a protest aimed at drawing attention to gender-based pay discrimination.

Party leader Gudrun Schyman said the money, donated by two men, was equivalent to the amount female workers in the county are denied every minute as a result of making less than men in the same jobs, The Local reported Tuesday.

Schyman said at the burning Tuesday in the city of Visby that the fire was a more effective tool than to "burn" the cash on a half-page advertisement calling for equal pay.

Baltimore suit pivots on discrimination

Baltimore -- A lawyer helping Baltimore sue Wells Fargo & Co. in a second round of litigation said the case centers on predatory lending involving African-Americans.

Attorney John Relman said, "Ultimately, the amount of damages in this case is far less significant than whether or not a jury says, 'You're right, Wells Fargo targeted an African-American community with predatory loans and they did it for reasons of greed," The Baltimore Sun reported Wednesday.

Last year, a judged dismissed the case, calling it "implausible" that the loans could be blamed for inner city decay, despite some of them ending in foreclosure.

The second suit filed against the bank attempts to answer that with specifics.

Town: Halal-only menu 'discrimination'

Roubaix, France -- A French town has filed a discrimination complaint against a fast-food restaurant that removed items that don't conform to Islamic dietary laws from its branch.

Roubaix Mayor Rene Vandierendonck, a Socialist, called for a boycott of the city's Quick branch, which removed all items from its menu that don't conform to Islamic halal dietary rules, and the town council filed a discrimination complaint against the chain, the BBC reported Friday.

Quick removed pork and other non-halal items from the menu of the Roubaix branch and several other locations in November. The move received condemnation from members of President Nicolas Sarkozy's conservative UMP party.

"I'm not bothered by the fact that there is a halal menu," Vandierendonck said.
