Art Quimby, legendary rebounder, dies

Storrs, Conn. -- Art Quimby, one of the greatest rebounders in NCAA history, has died at age 77, the University of Connecticut announced.

Quimby, born in New London, Conn., played for the UConn Huskies from 1951 to 1955. He led the nation in rebounding average as a junior with 22.6 a game, The Hartford Courant reported Wednesday. His 24.4 average the following season remains second in the nation, third all-time and first at UConn.

Quimby also led the Huskies in scoring his final three seasons, averaging 23.2 points as a senior.

A three-time All-Yankee Conference player, Quimby had combined points (1,398) and rebounds (1,716) exceeding any other player in UConn history.
