Sprint race at Watkins Glen rained out

Watkins Glen, N.Y. Aug. 9: A thunderstorm Sunday forced the postponement of the Sprint Cup Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips auto race in Watkins Glen, N.Y.

This is the second straight week a race was postponed by rain. Last week, it was the Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono.

Officials announced the postponement until noon Monday just before the command was given to start engines at 4 p.m. EDT.

NASCAR decided there was not enough daylight left to run the advertised 90-lap distance in its second road course race this season.

Jimmie Johnson will start on the pole after winning Friday's qualifying session. He has yet to win at either Watkins Glen or Sonoma, Calif., the site of the Toyota/Save Mart 350 in June.

Johnson wins pole at Watkins Glen

Watkins Glen, N.Y. Aug. 7: Three-time defending Sprint Cup series champion Jimmie Johnson won his first pole of the year Friday for Sunday's race at Watkins Glen International.

Johnson covered the 2.45-mile, 11-turn road course in 71.340 seconds (123.633 mph). It was his first pole victory since last November and his first ever in 16 tries on a road course.

"We did all the right things today," Johnson said. "The car could have been a little bit better. For us, it was a little bit adventurous from time to time in qualifying trim, but I guess we had fewer problems than everybody else in putting in really good laps."

Kurt Busch was second-quickest Friday, just .008 seconds behind Johnson.
