Dogs try out for 'Stupid Pet Tricks'

New York -- The talent coordinator for David Letterman says all the pets auditioning for an upcoming "Stupid Pet Tricks" segment in New York are "winners."

The tryouts were held in Central Park Saturday, and the talent was very good, Letterman coordinator Ryan Williams said in a New York Daily Post report.

"We saw a lot of really fun tricks," Williams said. "They haven't made my jaw drop, but they were funny. Everyone's a winner on 'Stupid Pet Tricks.'"

The pets displayed a wide range of tricks. Baxter the Yorkie, owned by Lynn Consovoy of Paramus, N.J., can sneeze on command.

A Wheaton Terrier brought by Upper West Side couple Al and Tanya Percival, can spin, but didn't.

Writer: Letterman was in on Phoenix joke

Hollywood -- David Letterman knew Joaquin Phoenix's bizarre behavior during an interview last year was an act, a writer for "The Late Show" host says.

Phoenix was a guest on "The Late Show" on Feb. 11, 2009, purportedly to promote his film "Two Lovers," but he made headlines for a bizarre and largely incoherent appearance in which he announced his retirement from acting and aspirations to become a hip-hop artist.

It turns out the affectation was designed to promote the upcoming Casey Affleck-directed flick "I'm Still Here," Affleck revealed Thursday, claiming no one else knew the plot, including Letterman.

Snooki set for first 'Letterman' chat

New York -- "Jersey Shore" star Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi has been booked to appear on "Late Show with David Letterman," CBS said Thursday.

Tuesday's interview will mark the first time the reality television personality has appeared on "Letterman."

Polizzi, 22, recently pleaded not guilty to several charges stemming from her July arrest on a New Jersey beach.

Accused of disorderly conduct and being a public nuisance while drunk, she is due back in court Sept. 8.

Letterman's would-be blackmailer freed

New York -- The former New York CBS television producer convicted of trying to blackmail "Late Show" host David Letterman was released from prison Thursday.

Robert "Joe" Halderman, who pleaded guilty to the blackmail accusation, was let go early for good behavior after serving four months of his six-month sentence, NY1 reported.

Halderman admitted to attempting to blackmail Letterman for $2 million over extramarital affairs he had with staff members, NY1 said.

Halderman's lawyer said he is happy to be out of prison and is looking for a job.

Michael Douglas undergoing cancer therapy

New York -- What began as an irritating sore throat turned out to be Stage 4 throat cancer, U.S. actor Michael Douglass revealed on "The Late Show with David Letterman."

"I got cancer," the Oscar-winning actor said Tuesday during a promotional tour for "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps."

Douglas said he underwent his first round of chemotherapy and radiation treatment last week, noting, "It's about an eight-week struggle."

Douglas said he learned he had cancer about three weeks ago, joking that it was about the time he was booked to appear on Letterman's show. He said he went through "a litany of doctors and tests" without success before the cancer was diagnosed after he and his family returned from a vacation in Europe.

Los Angeles -- Conan O'Brien's Emmy Award nomination was well-noted on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" in Los Angeles Thursday.

O'Brien briefly served as host of "Tonight" last year after NBC pushed Leno out of the spot. When O'Brien didn't work out, the network reinstated Leno.

O'Brien, who is heading to TBS to start up a new late-night chat show, earned and Emmy Award nod Thursday for his brief tenure on "Tonight."

"The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" will compete for the Emmy for outstanding variety, music or comedy series with "The Colbert Report," "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," "Real Time with Bill Maher" and "Saturday Night Live."

Eminem presents 'Late Show' Top 10 list

New York -- Hip-hop star Eminem presented a Top 10 list on "Late Show with David Letterman" in New York, CBS said.

The rapper read off the "Eminem Pieces of Advice for the Kids Top 10" on last Friday's episode of the show.

The roster read as follows:

10. Keep it real.

9. No one's ever regretted a tattoo.

8. With foreign markets volatile, now's a good time to invest in bonds.

7. Go see "Toy Story 3" -- the toys are back in town.

6. Always purchase music through authorized retailers that pay royalties to the artists.

McChrystal furor sparks 'Late Show' Top 10

New York -- Talk-show host David Letterman used the U.S. Gen. Stanley McChrystal story as fodder for one of his infamous Top 10 lists.

McChrystal resigned from his position as leader of U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan Wednesday, following the firestorm that erupted after he and his senior aides made disparaging and dismissive remarks about administration officials involved in Afghanistan policy in a profile to run in the next issue of Rolling Stone magazine.

Letterman jokes about Obama-Hayward chat

New York -- David Letterman read a Top 10 list on his talk show about U.S. President Barack Obama's meeting with BP President and Chief Executive Officer Tony Hayward.

Hayward apologized Thursday to a U.S. House panel, stating, "The explosion and fire aboard the Deepwater Horizon and the resulting oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico never should have happened, and I am deeply sorry that they did."

Hayward and other BP officials met Obama and White House staffers Wednesday to discuss the disaster.

The Top 10 list "Things Overheard During President Obama's Meeting with Tony Hayward" appeared on Wednesday's edition of "Late Show with David Letterman."
