Ferrer wins Valencia Open

Valencia, Spain -- No. 4-seeded David Ferrer claimed a straight-set win Sunday over Marcel Granollers in the championship match of the Valencia Open tennis tournament in Spain.

Ferrer, collecting his second title of 2010, beat Granollers 7-5, 6-3. Ferrer landed 75 percent of his first serves and finished by taking 69 percent of the points on serve. He also had three breaks in seven break-point situations.

Granollers was able to convert just one of his four break-point chances, that coming in the first set. But Ferrer got two breaks in that set when he won nearly as many points (28-22) off Granollers' serve as Granollers set.

Ferrer combined one service break with winning 71 percent of the points on serve in taking the second set.

Ferrer to face Granollers at Valencia

Valencia, Spain -- David Ferrer and fellow Spaniard Marcel Granollers will face off in the final of the Valencia Open thanks to semifinals victories Saturday.

Ferrer, seeded No. 4, emerged the winner in a hard-fought match against Sweden's Robin Soderling, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, reaching his fifth final of the season.

Ferrer has claimed one title this year, the eighth in his career, when he won the Acapulco event in February. That came one week after losing to Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero in the championship match at Buenos Aires.

Granollers, meanwhile, gained the Valencia final Saturday after beating Frenchman Gilles Simon 6-4, 6-4.

Ferrer back in men's tennis Top 10

London -- David Ferrer crept back into the men's tennis Top 10 as the 16 highest-ranked players head for Shanghai for a chance to win a place in the ATP World Finals.

Ferrer, who finished second at the China Open, created the only change in the Top 10 by switching places with Andy Roddick, dropping the American to No. 11. Ferrer is ranked 10th but is within 65 ratings points of the No. 8 ranking.

The World Finals, set for late November in London, take the eight highest-ranked players available -- some may be unable to play due to injury -- so positioning to be among the Top Eight in the rankings is important. That's why every player in the Top 16 is at the Shanghai Masters, which began Monday

Djokovic-Ferrer final postponed by rain

Beijing -- Heavy rains Sunday led tournament organizers to postpone until Monday the final of the China Open between Novak Djokovic and David Ferrer.

The start of the match was delayed 4 1/2 hours and once play did commence, Djokovic managed an early break to go up 3-1 in the first set. However, after about 30 minutes, play was called Sunday.

Both players are looking for their second tournament titles of the year but a finals win in Beijing may mean more for Ferrer, the current world No. 9, than for Djokovic. A win in the semifinals Saturday allowed Djokovic to secure a spot in the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals. The only other player to have locked up a spot is world No. 1 Rafael Nadal, who won the Japan Open title Sunday.

Querrey surprises Roddick in Cincinnati

Cincinnati, Aug. 19: Sam Querrey highlighted second-round action Wednesday at the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters by eliminating Andy Roddick in two tiebreaks.

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, the event's top two seeds, both advanced and Andy Murray survived as well.

The fifth-seeded Roddick, however, lost a 13-11 tiebreak in the opening set and then dropped the second in a 7-3 tiebreaker. That put Querrey in the third round against Lleyton Hewitt, who defeated Benjamin Becker 6-3, 6-3.

Federer opened his tournament with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Jose Acasuso. That set up a third-round meeting with David Ferrer, who had won his second-round match Tuesday.
