Mariners sign pitchers Aardsma, Lowe

Seattle -- The Seattle Mariners signed pitchers David Aardsma and Mark Lowe to one-year contracts Tuesday, avoiding salary arbitration for each, team officials said.

Aardsma, 28, went 3-6 and posted a 2.52 ERA in 2009, racking up 38 saves in his first season as a full-time closer. He came to the M's from Boston before the season for minor-leaguer Fabian Williamson.

Lowe was a workhorse for the Mariners last season, appearing in a career-high 75 games and going 2-7 with a 3.26 ERA in 80 innings.

"We are pleased to have David and Mark signed for 2010," General Manager Jack Zduriencik said. "It was an important process to get to this point and avoid any distraction as we prepare for the upcoming season."

Hernandez (17-5) added to his standing in the battle for the American League Cy Young Award by winning for the fifth time in six starts.

He gave up all four Toronto runs, three of them on a sixth-inning homer by Vernon Wells, but picked up the victory when Wilson came through with his clutch hit in the eighth.

MLB: Seattle 3, LA Angels 0

Seattle, Sept. 2: Felix Hernandez and David Aardsma combined to throw a four-hitter Wednesday and carry Seattle to a 3-0 blanking of the Los Angeles Angels.

The Angels, who began the night with a 4 1/2-game lead in the American League West, lost for the ninth time in 14 games. Their usually powerful offense has been shut out twice in the past week.

Hernandez (14-5) allowed all four of the Los Angeles hits and struck out six over eight innings. The Angels managed more than one base runner in an inning just once against Hernandez.

Aardsma came on to work a perfect ninth for his 33rd save.

The loss went to Scott Kazmir (8-8), making his first start for the Angels after being obtained in a waiver deal with Tampa Bay.

MLB: Seattle 6, Kansas City 3

Seattle, Aug. 29: Josh Wilson drove in three runs Friday, and Felix Hernandez bounced back from a poor start to help lift Seattle to a 6-3 decision over Kansas City.

Wilson hit a slow bouncer back to the pitcher in the second inning that allowed Mike Sweeney to score from third and singled in two runs in the fourth to give the Mariners a 5-1 lead.

That was enough for Hernandez (13-5), who limited the Royals to three runs on five hits in seven innings before turning things over to the bullpen.

Sean White retired the side in the eighth inning, and David Aardsma worked around a lead-off single in the ninth to grab his 31st save.

MLB: Seattle 5, Oakland 3

Seattle, Aug. 27: David Aardsma escaped a ninth-inning jam Wednesday, enabling the Seattle Mariners to complete a series sweep with a 5-3 win over Oakland.

Seattle's three straight wins over the Athletics have come on the heels of a stretch in which the Mariners had lost seven games in 10 outings.

Jose Lopez put Seattle in front for good with a two-run homer in the first and Bill Hall drove in two runs with a single in the third and a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

That gave Luke French (4-3) enough of a cushion to win his second straight start.

French, obtained from Detroit at the trade deadline in the deal that sent Jarrod Washburn to the Tigers, allowed three runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings.

MLB: Seattle 3, Oakland 1

Seattle, Aug. 25: Ian Snell turned in his second straight excellent outing with his new team Monday, carrying the Seattle Mariners to a 3-1 decision over Oakland.

All of the Seattle runs came on homers -- a solo shot by Jose Lopez in the third and a two-run blast from Ken Griffey Jr. in the fifth.

Both home runs came off Vin Mazzaro (4-9).

David Aardsma gave up a leadoff double in the ninth, but retired the next three batters to collect his 29th save.

MLB: Seattle 3, Detroit 1

Detroit, Aug. 19: Don Snell won his first game in a Seattle uniform Friday and Ichiro Suzuki contributed a two-run homer, lifting the Mariners over Detroit 3-1.

Snell (1-1), obtained from Pittsburgh prior to the July 31 trade deadline, was making his fourth start for the Mariners. His last two appearances were struggles, including one in which he gave up six walks in 1 1/3 innings.

He allowed the Tigers only a run on four hits over 5 2/3 innings Wednesday.

MLB: Chicago White Sox 3, Seattle 1

Seattle, Aug. 12: Alexei Ramirez smacked a three-run homer in the ninth inning Tuesday and the Chicago White Sox beat Seattle 3-1.

Mariners' pitchers held the White Sox to just two hits through eight innings but A.J. Pierzynski drew a one-out walk from Seattle reliever David Aardsma (3-4) and Carlos Quentin followed with a single. Ramirez stroked his 13th home run of the season to put the White Sox ahead and Bobby Jenks pitched a scoreless ninth to get his 23rd save.

John Danks (10-8) went eight innings, allowing one run on seven hits with one walk and eight strikeouts for the White Sox, who won for just the second time in six games.

MLB: Seattle 7, Kansas City 6

Kansas City, Mo. Aug. 5: Jose Lopez and Russell Bryan each had two RBI for Seattle in the Mariners' 7-6 win over the Kansas City Royals Tuesday.

Bryan drove in the go-ahead run with a base hit in the seventh, and Ichiro Suzuki and Ken Griffey Jr. drove in a run apiece.

Bryan broke a 6-6 tie with a bouncer up the middle with runners at the corners off Ron Mahay, who had come in to relieve Jamey Wright (1-4).

Shawn Kelly (3-1) picked up the win in relief, and David Aardsma earned his 26th save with a scoreless ninth.

Seattle scored twice in the sixth to take a 6-5 lead, but Kansas City tied it in the bottom half of the inning on a Yuniesky Betancourt RBI double. Betancourt also drove in a run in the fourth with a triple.

Jose Lopez had three of the Mariners' 11 hits -- one a solo, fifth-inning homer.

Seattle has now won two in a row after a four-game losing streak.

Winner Ryan Rowland-Smith (1-1), who didn't surrender a hit through six innings, yielded three hits -- one a two-run homer by Adam Lind -- and three hits in seven innings.

Closer David Aardsma recorded his 25th save.

Alex Rios and Aaron Hill had the other hits for the Blue Jays, who have lost five of seven.

MLB: Seattle 4, Toronto 3

The win snapped a four-game Seattle losing streak and gave David Aardsma (3-3) the victory after pitching a scoreless ninth.

Seattle led 3-1 after seven innings. Suzuki scored in the first on a base hit by Mike Sweeney. Seattle added two in the sixth on an RBI double by Chris Shelton and a running-scoring single by Hannahan.
