Satellites to aid European farmers

Paris -- Farmers in Europe may soon get a hand in managing their fields courtesy of satellite observation and navigation, European Space Agency officials say.

The agency's TalkingField initiative will allow for more precision in farming methods to produce crops more efficiently, an ESA release says.

"There are existing services variously employing Earth observation data, satellite navigation, farm management software and crop growth models, but TalkingFields is the first to combine them all," ESA's Tony Sephton said.

Tanasugarn takes WTA Osaka tournament

Osaka, Japan -- Tamarine Tanasugarn battled Kimiko Date Krumm for more than three hours Sunday before claiming the championship of the Japan Women's Open tennis tournament.

Tanasugarn, No. 94 in the world, topped the sixth-seeded Date Krumm 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1 in the 3-hour, 7-minute match. It was her fourth WTA title overall but first since June 2009 when she defended her tournament championship of the tour stop in the Netherlands.

She was the fifth player this year ranked higher than 90th to win a tournament title.
Tanasugarn piled up eight service breaks, including three in the third set, overcoming four drops of serve of her own. She won 62 percent of the points in the third set, compared to 49 percent in the first two.

Sean Connery misses Spanish court date

Marbella, Spain -- Academy Award-winning actor Sean Connery failed to appear in a Spanish courtroom, raising the possibility of an international arrest warrant.

Connery faxed the Costa del Sol court to say he hadn't had enough time to prepare for the trip from his home in the Bahamas to make the Friday court date regarding a disputed land deal, Britain's Daily Mail reported.

The investigating magistrate had threatened to issue an arrest warrant for Connery, 80, but the Mail said it's more likely the court will ask to speak to Connery at his Caribbean home.

Three 10s in date equal 33,000 weddings

Newark, N.J. -- Sunday is a 10 for couples, who are marrying by the thousands on the auspicious, and easily remembered, date of 10/10/10.

More than American 32,000 couples are scheduled to marry on this date, said theweddingchannel.com and theknot.com, two wedding Web sites cited by The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J.

On Oct. 10 last year, only around 5,000 couples exchanged vows. Sunday has the most weddings scheduled since July 7, 2007, which saw roughly 54,000.

"We came to the realization that 10/10/10 would probably be the best," said Adam Polhemus, who is marrying Kristin Wallenstein in Holmdel, N.J. "It's definitely an anniversary I can't forget and screw up."

Etheridge ready to date again

Los Angeles -- U.S. singer-composer Melissa Etheridge says she is ready to date again after splitting with longtime partner Tammy Lynn Michaels.

Etheridge, 49, at Hard Rock's Breast Cancer Awareness program launch this week, told People magazine "You gotta be fearless about these things." She added, "There is no fear when you choose love. The more you choose love, the more love is in your life. It gets easier and easier."

Etheridge sharied custody of her two youngest children with Michaels. "I have four kids," she told the magazine. "It's hard because, of course, it's easier with two (parents), but you're a mom and you do what you do."

"We appreciate your support during this time … please be assured that we will fight to restore our good name," Friedlander said in letter addressed to employees and company stakeholders after the U.S. Small Business Administration took the rarely taken step of suspending the company, a top-50 contractor for the Pentagon, from being awarded new government contracts.

The SBA alleges that GTSI used small businesses as intermediaries to secure contracts intended for small companies, The Washington Post reported Saturday.
