Franchitti wins third IndyCar championship

Homestead -- Dario Franchitti's eighth-place finish in Saturday's Indy 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway clinched his third IZOD IndyCar Series title.

Franchitti's Indy crown was the third of his career, tying Sam Hornish Jr. for the most titles series history. He edged out Will Power for the honor after Power damaged his car's suspension in the 135th lap and finished 57 laps behind in 25th place.

Power entered Saturday's race with an 11-point lead but Franchitti ending up edging him by five points.

Target Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Dixon, meanwhile, won the Homestead-Miami race, his third title of the season and the 24th of his IndyCar career.

Danica Patrick matched her season's best with a season-place finish.

Franchitti wins pole for final Indy race

Homestead -- Dario Franchitti moved closer to his second straight IndyCar championship Friday by winning the pole for the season-ending race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Franchitti turned in a two-lap average of 213.187 mph and will start in front Saturday in the Cafes do Brasil Indy 300. He won his second pole of the season and earned a point in the championship race.

Going into the final event, Franchitti is second in points -- 11 behind Will Power. Franchitti will win the championship if he leads the most laps and wins the race, no matter what Power does.

Franchitti will also claim the crown if he wins and Power finishes third or lower.

Franchitti edges Power for Mid-Ohio win

Lexington, Ohio -- Dario Franchitti hung on down the stretch, holding off a determined Will Power Sunday to claim the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Franchitti used smart pit stop management in the late going, beating Power out of the pits twice and then beating back a furious charge to win by a half-second.

The victory was Franchitti's second of the year following his win at the Indianapolis 500 in May. It was also the 15th of his IndyCar career.

Power's second-place finish allowed him to clinch the IZOD Series' first road/street course championship, posting a 41-point lead over Franchitti in the rankings.

Third place went to Helio Castroneves.

Power edges Franchitti in Toronto IndyCar

Toronto -- Team Penske's Will Power grabbed the lead with 14 laps remaining Sunday and held off Dario Franchitti to win the Honda Indy Toronto.

Power bypassed pole sitter Justin Wilson for the lead after a restart and then dueled defending champ Franchitti on the Toronto street course, edging him by 1.28 seconds.

Power took his fourth road course win of the year, including at Watkins Glen, N.Y., two weeks ago. The 29-year-old Australian improved his lead in the IndyCar championship standings, posting a 42-point advantage over Franchitti with Sunday's victory.

Grabbing third place was Ryan Hunter-Reay. Tony Kanaan and Graham Rahal ended in fourth and fifth place respectively while Danica Patrick took the sixth position.

Franchitti saves fuel, wins Indy 500

Indianapolis -- Dario Franchitti was able to save just enough fuel down the stretch of a dominating performance Sunday to collect the victory at the Indianapolis 500.

Franchitti led for 155 of the 200 laps, taking his last pit stop on lap 164 and skillfully using just enough of his remaining fuel to end up in the winner's circle.

When pole sitter and defending champion Helios Castroneves was forced to pit with nine laps left, Franchetti surged into the lead for good.

Castroneves ended up ninth.

With Franchitti's win, Target Team owner Chip Ganassi became the first owner to collect wins at both the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500 NASCAR race.

Franchitti takes pole for Firestone 300

Homestead, Oct. 9 -- Dario Franchitti, averaging 212.696 mph, won the pole Friday for the Firestone Indy 300 at Homestead, Fla.

Franchitti will start from the pole for the fifth time this season.

Scott Dixon was second and Ryan Briscoe third in qualifying for the season-ending IndyCar race to be run Saturday at the Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Franchitti got a bonus point by winning the pole and is four points behind first-place Dixon in the race for the IndyCar Series championship.

"I was pleasantly surprised since we hadn't run quite well in practice this morning," Franchitti said after qualifying at the1.5-mile track.

Dixon takes lead in IndyCar points chase

Motegi, Japan, Sept. 19: Scott Dixon won the Indy Japan 300 Saturday and vaulted from third to first place in the championship race with one event remaining.

Dixon fought off teammate Dario Franchitti by 1.4 seconds to capture his fifth IndyCar race of the year.

Graham Rahal finished third, followed by Oriol Servia, Mario Moraes and Danica Patrick.

Dixon picked up 53 points, the maximum number available at any IndyCar race. He won 50 points for finishing first, got one point for winning the pole and collected two more for leading the most laps in the race.

Franchitti is winner at Sonoma

Sonoma, Calif. Aug. 23: Dario Franchitti led all the way Sunday in California's Grand Prix of Sonoma, winning his fourth IndyCar Series race of the year.

Franchitti avoided a seven-car pileup on the first lap en route to a 0.25-second win over Ryan Briscoe.

"Track position was critical today," said Franchitti, who started on the pole. "It probably wasn't the most interesting race for the fans, but I did what I had to do today."

Defending champion Helio Castroneves finished 18th.

Briscoe leads Franchitti by four points in the race standings with three events to go. Scott Dixon is in third place.

Dixon also has four wins this season. Briscoe has been a runner-up seven times.

Will Power captures Indy race at Edmonton

Edmonton, Alberta July 26: Will Power won Sunday's IRL Rexall Edmonton Indy auto race at Edmonton, Alberta.

Power started from the pole position, led 90 of the race's 95 laps and relinquished the lead only when he stopped on pit road. His dominance made him a first-time winner on the IndyCar circuit.

Power, driving the No. 12 Penske Truck Rental car, led teammate Helio Castroneves by one second when the race ended under a caution flag after an incident involving Tomas Scheckter with less than two laps remaining.

"It caps a perfect weekend," said Power, who has finished 1-2-3-5-6 this season in part-time duty for Penske Racing.

Franchitti wins IRL race in Toronto

Toronto -- Dario Franchitti won Sunday's IRL Honda Indy Toronto auto race after avoiding a series of late-race crashes.

He captured the race on the streets of the Ontario capital despite a problem with his left-rear tire during his first stop.

Later, the Chip Ganassi Racing driver would benefit when Graham Rahal was involved in an incident just when Franchitti entered pit road before a caution flag.

"I guess we timed it right with strategy," Franchitti, the 2007 series champion, said following his third victory this season and 11th in his IndyCar career.

Franchitti wins Long Beach Grand Prix

Long Beach, Calif. -- Dario Franchitti won Sunday's IndyCar Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach by leading 51 of the California auto race's 85 laps.

The Target Chip Ganassi Racing driver and 2007 IndyCar champion was helped by the second of two key pit stops in his first victory since the Indy 300, the 2007 IRL season-finale at the Chicagoland Raceway in Joliet, Ill.

After holding a three-second lead, Franchitti pitted early on lap 53 for his second and final stop.

Will Power, Tony Kanaan and Danica Patrick also came in sooner than expected as part of their race strategies.
