Olsen named coach of D.C. United

Washington -- Ben Olsen, who was D.C. United's interim coach since August, has been named head coach, the Major League Soccer club announced Monday.

Olsen, 33, is the youngest full-time head coach in the history of the league, which was formed in 1993. He succeeds Curt Onalfo, who was dismissed Aug. 4 with the team sitting at 3-12-3.

D.C. United officials had previously said Olsen, who compiled a 3-8-1 record interim coach, did not have enough experience for the permanent job.

"We spent a great deal of time on this decision and interviewed a number of qualified candidates," D.C. United Chief Executive Officer and President Kevin Payne said.

D.C. United fires coach

Washington -- D.C. United, which has the worst record in the MLS, Wednesday fired Coach Curt Onalfo.

The team said Ben Olsen, who played for D.C. United from 1998-2009, was installed as interim head coach. Chad Ashton, previously D.C. United's technical director, was made interim assistant coach and current assistants Kris Kelderman and Mark Simpson will retain their positions.

Onalfo was let go after just seven months with D.C. United. The team is 3-12-3 this year and has scored a league-low 12 goals while giving up a league-high 31.
