1 of the Riskiest Investments You Can Make

Go ahead. Call me crazy. It's music to my ears. See, my best investments tend to happen when people call me foolish (with a lower-case "f"). Conversely, my worst investments are usually made when people tell me how great the trade is sure to be.

Oprah stuns crowd with 'favorite things'

Chicago -- Oprah is a favorite among the audience members who wound up with thousands of dollars worth of stuff during the taping of her first "Favorite Things" episode.

The delirious crowd went home Friday with freebies that included a new 52-inch, Sony 3D television and a commemorative diamond "Oprah" wrist watch valued at nearly $3,000.

"Oprah was as excited as we were," said Marlene Scott. "She's a billionaire and can have anything she wants, but she was genuine and personal with everyone."

Scott was more than just lucky. The Chicago Sun-Times said Saturday that the hand-picked audience had all performed some type of selfless act for others.

Protesters greet Blair book tour in Dublin

Dublin, Ireland -- Irish police said they jostled with a noisy crowd of protesters during former British prime minister Tony Blair's book-signing appearance in Dublin Saturday.

Eggs and shoes were hurled at Blair along with assorted chants such as "Arrest the butcher Blair" outside Eason's bookstore during Blair's first public signing of his memoirs.

There was some pushing and shoving between police and about 200 anti-war protesters along the security barricades, Sky News reported.

Sky News said undercover police officers had infiltrated the crowd ahead of Blair's arrival and autograph seekers had to leave purses and other items outside.

Thief's wrong turn lands him in jail

Florence, Italy -- A purse-snatcher's escape went awry Tuesday when he ducked into a building only to realize it was a police station, bemused police officials said.

The alleged thief, described as a young Romanian, apparently thought he was running into a post office where he may have intended to blend into the crowd, the Italian news agency ANSA reported. Instead, he looked up to see himself among police officers.

The man's victims showed up shortly after and the man was arrested.

"It was like something out of 'I Soliti Ignoti,'" an onlooker told ANSA, referring to the 1958 Italian comedy starring Marcello Mastroianni in the story of a band of small-time crooks who try to burgle a government-owned pawn shop.

Winnipeg crowd makes short work of soup

Winnipeg, Manitoba -- Organizers of a festival honoring Canada's fur-trapping forefathers called it a fitting tribute after 2,500 bowls of pea soup disappeared in 90 minutes.

"It is in the spirit of the voyageur tradition," declared Festival du Voyageur manager Colin Mackie after the hot soup was gobbled down on Sunday.

"That's what they ate," Mackie added. "What's better on a cold day than to get a hot cup of soup?"

The soup was likely a cut above what was served on those wind-swept river banks by the early traders. According to Monday's Winnipeg Free Press, the soup served at the festival was the product of recipes from 10 top Winnipeg restaurants.

The newspaper said the 40th anniversary of the festival drew a record 105,000 visitors over 10 days this year.
