Fourth grader's backpack stirs controversy

Land O’Lakes, Fla. -- A Florida fourth grader's designer backpack is raising controversy due to the image of a scantily clad woman with a snake on the back.

Fred Ferrer of Land O'Lakes said his son, Quentin, was told by Richey Elementary School Principal Ken Miesner Friday that he could no longer bring the backpack to school after a complaint from a kindergarten parent, the St. Petersburg Times reported Wednesday.

Fossils double age of humans in Asia

Beijing -- New fossil evidence suggests modern humans could have reached East Asia much earlier than previously believed, researchers say.

Chinese and U.S. researchers have analyzed fossilized teeth and part of a jaw unearthed in southern China in 2007 and say the fragments belonged to a "modern" human who lived 100,000 years ago, the BBC reported Tuesday.

The result is likely to generate controversy, as the earliest humans previously known in East Asia were just half that age, the BBC said.

If the age of the fossils is confirmed it means modern humans co-existed with our closest relatives -- Neanderthals and Neanderthal-like people -- across Asia, one researcher said.

Controversy over possible Colo. wolf pack

Denver -- A report of a wolf pack living in western Colorado has been met with celebration by advocates and skepticism from local ranchers, authorities said.

The possible presence of wolves in Colorado, where they were killed off 70 years ago, is a controversial matter, The Denver Post reported Tuesday.

Advocates say wolves will improve the state's ecological balance, while those making a living by ranching or hunting see them as damaging predators threatening their livelihoods.

"People don't understand they are not just big, fluffy animals. They are devastating," said rancher Joe Latham.

But wolf advocates say it's not the animals themselves people fear.

"It really has nothing to do with wolves. It has to do with wolves as symbols.
