Yanks' GM set to woo free agent Cliff Lee

New York -- New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman was set Wednesday to meet with free agent Texas Rangers pitcher Cliff Lee, MLB.com reported.

The Web site, citing an unnamed baseball source, said the Yankees' boss would meet with the left-handed ace and his agent, Darek Braunecker, in Arkansas.

Cashman has said signing Lee, who guided the Rangers past New York and into the World Series this season, is a top priority for the Yankees this offseason. The team didn't waste much time, reportedly first reaching out to him Sunday night only minutes after free agents rules allowed.

Lee's wife: Yankees fans spit, threw beer

New York -- The wife of Texas Rangers pitcher Cliff Lee says New York Yankees fans threw beer and spit on her during the American League Championship Series.

Kristen Lee told Tuesday's USA Today she was the subject of obscenities, ugly taunts, thrown beer and spitting from the section above her as her husband -- a free agent-to-be -- shut down the Yankees.

Cliff Lee will likely consider a lucrative offer from New York during the off-season after competing in the World Series with the Rangers.

"The fans did not do good things in my heart," Kristen Lee told the newspaper. "When people are staring at you, and saying horrible things, it's hard not to take it personal."

Lincecum, Lee to open World Series

San Francisco -- San Francisco Giants ace Tim Lincecum will face the Texas Rangers' Cliff Lee in Game 1 of the World Series, Giants Manager Bruce Bochy said Monday.

Bochy revealed he will go with the two-time Cy Young Award winner in Wednesday's first game at AT&T Park in San Francisco, followed by right-hander Matt Cain in Game 2.

Rangers Manager Ron Washington has revealed left-handed ace Lee will go in the first contest, followed by C.J. Wilson in Game 2 and Colby Lewis in Game 3, ESPN reported.

Bochy said Jonathan Sanchez would start for the Giants in Game 3 at Arlington, Texas, despite an erratic outing in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series against Philadelphia -- which the Giants eventually won to clinch the NL pennant.

MLB: Texas 5, Tampa Bay 1

St. Petersburg, Fla. -- Cliff Lee tossed a six-hit complete game Tuesday and the Texas Rangers defeated Tampa Bay 5-1 to claim their American League Division Series.

Lee (2-0) allowed only one run over nine innings, walking none and striking out 11 to give the Rangers the first post-season series win in their franchise history.

The left-hander, obtained by the Rangers from Seattle in a trade deadline deal, notched his second win in the series. He threw 120 pitches, 89 of them for strikes.

Nelson Cruz came in to score on catcher Kelley Shoppach's fourth-inning throwing error, one of two miscues committed by the Rays, and Ian Kinsler smacked a two-run homer in the ninth inning for the victors.

Rangers lefty Lee gets back injection

Kansas City, Mo. -- Texas Rangers pitcher Cliff Lee has received an injection to counter an ailing back, the team said Wednesday.

Rangers assistant General Manager Thad Levine told MLB.com the team had sent Lee from Kansas City to Texas Tuesday to have his lower back examined by Dr. Keith Meister following Tuesday's 10-9 loss to the Royals.

"Meister did not seem to think it was too serious," Levine said. "He thinks the injection will give him a lot of relief."

Lee was diagnosed with some muscular pain and inflammation.

Levine told the Web site the Rangers' left-handed ace, obtained from the Seattle Mariners for the playoff run, is still scheduled to pitch Monday against the Blue Jays.

MLB: Texas 3, Oakland 1 (10 innings)

Arlington, Texas -- The Texas Rangers topped Oakland 3-1 Tuesday on a brilliant start by Cliff Lee and a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Lee did not get the win, but his nine innings on the mound included a career-high 13 strikeouts with five hits, no walks and one unearned run.

Neftali Perez (2-2) pitched the 10th and was credited with the win. Michael Wuertz (2-2) took the loss after serving up a slider Cruz launched into the left field seats for his 14th home run this season.

Cliff Lee traded to Texas

Arlington, Texas -- The Texas Rangers announced Friday they had acquired star pitcher Cliff Lee in a trade with the Seattle Mariners.

Lee was dealt along with pitcher Mark Lowe in exchange for first baseman Justin Smoak and three minor league players.

There had been speculation throughout baseball that Lee would be traded to the New York Yankees. Lee had been scheduled to pitch against the Yankees Friday, but was scratched from the lineup during the afternoon.

MLB: Seattle 8, Chi. Cubs 1

Seattle -- Cliff Lee went the distance for the second consecutive start Wednesday, boosting Seattle to an 8-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

The Mariners won their sixth straight, their longest streak of the season, getting a two-run homer and four RBI from Michael Saunders.

Lee (6-3) gave up nine hits, struck out nine and did not walk a batter. It was his fourth complete game of the season and his 17th in a nine-year career. He has walked only four batters all season and has gone a club-record 37 straight innings without issuing a base on balls.

No Seattle pitcher had thrown back-to-back complete games since Freddy Garcia did so nine years ago.

Mariners P Lee placed on disabled list

Seattle -- The Seattle Mariners have placed starting pitcher Cliff Lee on the 15-day disabled list, team officials said Sunday.

The move was not unexpected because the left-hander had been suffering from a lower right abdominal strain, sustained during a March 15 spring training game.

His placement on the DL was retroactive to March 26.

Trainers have prescribed rest after treating Lee with platelet-rich plasma therapy to speed up the recovery process. Mariners' officials said Lee had a pain-free workout last week but have nevertheless opted to delay his Seattle debut after acquiring him in an off-season trade with Philadelphia.

Phillies retain pitcher Cliff Lee

Philadelphia -- The Philadelphia Phillies Friday picked up ace left-hander Cliff Lee's $9 million 2010 contract option.

Before the Phillies lost the World Series to the New York Yankees, Lee was on his way to a Series MVP. He beat the Yankees twice and was a combined 4-0 in the post-season.

After he was acquired from Cleveland with outfielder Ben Francisco for four prospects in July, Lee went 7-4 with a 3.39 ERA in 12 starts.

Also, the Phillies won the five times the 2008 American League Cy Young Award winner pitched in the playoffs.

MLB: Philadelphia 6, New York Yankees 1

New York -- Cliff Lee went the distance Wednesday and Philadelphia opened its bid for a second straight World Series title by beating the New York Yankees 6-1.

Lee did not allow a run until the ninth inning and that one was unearned. He struck out 10 while throwing 123 pitches in cool, often rainy weather.

Chase Utley hit two homers off Yankees ace CC Sabathia and the Phillies added two runs each in the eighth and ninth innings to take a 1-0 lead in the 105th World Series. New York will host Game 2 Thursday.

Philadelphia defeated the Yankees in a World Series game for the first time in franchise history. New York swept the Phillies in their only other championship meeting 59 years ago.

MLB: Philadelphia 5, Colorado 1

Philadelphia -- Cliff Lee pitched a complete-game six-hitter Wednesday, leading Philadelphia to a 5-1 win over Colorado in Game 1 of the National League Division Series.

Lee (1-0), acquired from Cleveland at this year's trading deadline, came within one out of a complete-game in his first-ever post-season appearance.

He did not walk a batter in 113 pitches, fanned five, threw 25 first pitch strikes, and was the first pitcher ever to steal a base in the post-season after his two-out, third-inning single.

Before a seventh-inning double by Garrett Atkins, Lee had retired 16 straight batters.

Raul Ibanez led Philadelphia batters with two hits and two RBI.
