MLB: San Diego 5, Arizona 0

San Diego -- Clayton Richard cruised through six scoreless innings Tuesday to lead the San Diego Padres past Arizona 5-0.

Richard (12-5) gave up three of Arizona's five hits and struck out eight en route to the win.

San Diego, leaders in the National League West, has won seven of its last nine games.

Chris Denorfia has a two-run homer for the Padres and Will Venable provided a two-run shot in the second that got San Diego off to a 2-0 lead. Ryan Ludwick also notched an RBI.

Rodrigo Lopez (5-12) lost his fifth consecutive decision. He gave up five runs on nine hits over 4 1/3 innings.

Jason Upton had a hit and walked three times for the Diamondbacks, who have lost six of their last eight.

MLB: San Diego 3, San Francisco 2

San Francisco -- Clayton Richard and three relievers blanked San Francisco over the final eight innings Friday and San Diego opened a key series with a 3-2 win over the Giants.

The Padres won their fifth straight and extended their lead over the second-place Giants in the National League West to 3 1/2 games.

San Francisco scored twice in the opening frame off Richard (10-5), but he settled down to hold the Giants in check for the rest of his six-inning stint. Richard gave up six hits.

Luke Gregerson, Mike Adams and Heath Bell combined to give up a lone hit over the last three innings. Bell issued a one-out walk in the ninth before earning his 35th save.

MLB: Atlanta 9, San Diego 1

Atlanta, Aug. 27: Javier Vazquez struck out six in seven shutout innings Thursday and drove in two runs as Atlanta cruised past San Diego 9-1.

The Braves avoided a three-game sweep and moved into a second-place tie with Florida in the National League East. Atlanta and Florida trail Philadelphia by seven games for the division lead.

Vazquez (11-9) allowed five hits and did not walk a batter in winning for the sixth time in eight decisions.

Atlanta scored five times in the second, with the first two runs coming in on a bases-loaded single by Vazquez. Matt Diaz also had RBI singles in the second and third.

The Braves prevented what would have been the first three-game series sweep in Atlanta for the Padres in 20 years.

MLB: San Diego 4, St. Louis 0

San Diego, Aug. 22: Clayton Richard threw six shutout innings and struck out six Friday in San Diego's 4-0 victory over St. Louis.

It marked the Padres' first win over the Cardinals in 11 tries.

St. Louis entered the contest having won 11 of its last 13 games. But Richard and four relievers cooled the Cards.

Richard (7-3) has gone 3-0 since he came to the Padres in the trade that sent former NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy to the Chicago White Sox.

Nick Hundley gave the Padres the lead with a three-run homer in the second and they added a run in the eighth on an RBI single by Kevin Kouzmanoff.

Kyle Lohse (4-8), who pitched four innings, gave up the Hundley homer.

MLB: San Diego 13, Milwaukee 6

Milwaukee, Aug. 12: Adrian Gonzalez had six hits and three RBI Tuesday to lead the San Diego Padres to a 13-6 thumping of the Milwaukee Brewers.

Will Venable and Henry Blanco both hit solo home runs for the Padres, who racked up 22 hits and won for the fourth time in their last five games.

San Diego broke a 2-2 with a run in the fifth inning and then exploded for six runs in the sixth and three in the seventh.

Gonzalez had a two-run single in the sixth and another RBI in the seventh.

Clayton Richard (2-0) picked up the win for the Padres despite giving up four runs on six hits in six innings.

Braden Looper (10-6) took the loss after giving up seven runs -- five earned -- on 11 hits in five-plus innings.

MLB: San Diego 8, New York Mets 3

San Diego, Aug. 7: Adrian Gonzalez helped San Diego build a seven-run lead with three RBI Thursday and the Padres coasted from there to an 8-3 victory over the New York Mets.

The Mets have not won a series in San Diego since 2002 and they got off to a bad start in this four-game set by surrendering a four-run third inning.

Gonzalez had a sacrifice fly in the first and hit a two-run homer in the third.

Clayton Richard (5-3) had a shutout working until running into trouble in the sixth. He gave up three runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings in his second start with the Padres.

Richard came to San Diego from Chicago last week in the deal that sent Jake Peavy to the White Sox.

MLB: Chicago White Sox 5, Detroit 1

Detroit, July 26: Paul Konerko hit a two-run homer and Clayton Richard pitched eight innings of one-run ball Sunday to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 5-1 win over Detroit.

The White Sox scored four times in the first inning, getting two runs on a fielder's choice ground ball by Jim Thome and a throwing error by Adam Everett, and then adding two more when Konerko drove in Thome.

Gordon Beckham capped the scoring for Chicago with a second-inning solo home run and Richard (4-3) made the lead stand up, scattering five hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Tony Pena pitched a perfect ninth in a non-save situation.

The White Sox avoided a four-game sweep in Detroit and finished the weekend two games behind the first-place Tigers in the AL Central Division.

MLB: Chicago WSox 11, Cleveland 4

Cleveland, June 30: Gordon Beckham was 3-for-4 with a homer, two RBI and two runs Tuesday to help the Chicago White Sox beat Cleveland 11-4.

The game was called in the seventh inning because of rain.

Paul Konerko hit a two-run homer and Josh Fields a solo homer for the White Sox, who had 17 hits. Jermaine Dye was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored for Chicago, which has won four in a row.

The game was delayed three times for a total of 1 hour, 59 minutes.

Clayton Richard (3-1) four runs on four hits for the win.

Travis Hafner hit a solo homer for the Indians, who have lost four straight.

MlB: Chi. White Sox 4, Pittsburgh 0

Chicago -- Clayton Richard held the Pirates to four hits in six scoreless innings Saturday, pacing the Chicago White Sox to a 4-0 win over Pittsburgh.

Richard (1-0) threw 107 pitches with three walks and eight strikeouts.

His effort came despite rumors he was being used to bait veteran right-hander Jake Peavy to accept a trade from the San Diego Padres.

Alexei Ramirez hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning. Jermaine Dye's lone hit was an eighth-inning solo shot and Paul Konerko hit a fourth-inning RBI single for the White Sox, who won for the fourth time in five games, despite just six hits.

Andy LaRoche had two of the five hits for the Pirates, who have dropped three straight.
