Clay Buchholz

MLB: Boston 6, Los Angeles Angels 0

Boston -- Clay Buchholz tossed seven shutout innings and Ryan Kalish hit a grand slam Tuesday to power the Boston Red Sox to a 6-0 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

Buchholz (14-5) held the Angels to five hits, walked two and fanned three to improve to 4-0 in his last five starts.

Kalish's fourth-inning blast -- his second career homer and first grand slam -- broke open a 1-0 game and David Ortiz added two hits and scored twice for the Red Sox, who took the opener of a three-game set against Los Angeles at Fenway Park.

Boston's Dustin Pedroia went 0-for-4 in his return from the disabled list.

Jered Weaver (11-8) was saddled with the loss, surrendering six runs on six hits over five innings for the Angels.

MLB: Toronto 8, Boston 7

Boston, Sept. 29: Adam Lind had three home runs and four RBI Tuesday to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to an 8-7 win over the Boston Red Sox.

The Red Sox could have clinched the American League wild-card berth with a win, as their magic number is one.

Lind had his first career three-homer game, hitting one in the first, fifth and seventh innings. Jose Bautista and Aaron Hill also homered and Kevin Millar went 3-for-4 with an RBI for Toronto, which has won five in a row and eight of nine.

Ricky Romero (13-9) got the win after limiting the Red Sox to two runs on seven hits in five innings.

Clay Buchholz (7-4) took the loss after giving up seven runs on eight hits in five innings.

MLB: Boston 10, Kansas City 3

Kansas City, Mo., Sept. 25: Clay Buchholz threw 6 2/3 shutout innings Thursday and the Boston Red Sox moved closer to a playoff berth with a 10-3 decision over Kansas City.

Boston climbed eight games in front of Texas in the American League wild-card race with 10 games remaining. Any combination of three Boston wins or Texas losses will make the Red Sox a playoff team for the third straight year.

Buchholz (7-3) allowed five hits and struck out eight. He left the game with a 5-0 lead, thanks in part to a solo homer David Ortiz during a three-run fourth.

Kansas City closed within 6-3 in the eighth, but the Red Sox tacked on four runs in the ninth -- two of them scoring on a double by Ortiz.

MLB: Boston 3, Baltimore 1

Baltimore, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Clay Buchholz and four relievers combined to throw a five-hitter Friday in Boston's 3-1 victory over Baltimore.

Buchholz (6-3) won his fifth straight decision and helped Boston bounce back from a setback Thursday that ended its seven-game winning streak.

The Red Sox inched closer to a playoff spot after beginning the day with a six-game advantage over Texas in the American League wild-card race.

Buchholz allowed all five Baltimore hits, walked three and struck out one in six innings. Daniel Bard and Hideki Okajima worked an inning each and Jonathan Papelbon came on to pitch a perfect ninth for his 37th save.

MLB: Boston 6, Tampa Bay 3

St. Petersbutg, Fla. Sept. 3: Jason Bay's two hits and two RBI Thursday led the Boston Red Sox to a 6-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Both RBI came on his two-out, first-inning double.

Later, Kevin Youkilis had three hits and one RBI and Victor Martinez had two hits and one RBI. Rocco Baldelli and Mike Lowell each batted in a run.

Winner Clay Buchholz (4-3) gave up three runs and six hits in six innings for the Red Sox, who won two of the three games in the series.

Closer Jonathan Papelbon earned his 34th save, striking out two of the three batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth.

Tampa Bay's Evan Longoria had two of Tampa Bay's six hits and one RBI.

MLB: Boston 12, Chicago White Sox 8

Boston, Aug. 24: Mike Lowell finished off a six-run third inning with a three-run homer Monday, sparking the Boston Red Sox to a 12-8 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

The Red Sox, having lost twice in a three-game weekend series against the New York Yankees, climbed 1 ½ games in front of idle Texas at the top of the American League wild-card race. Boston is seven games behind the Yankees in the AL East.

Boston took a 9-4 lead through four innings, but only three of those runs were earned. A fielding error by Chicago starter Jose Contreras opened the gates for Boston's big third inning.

MLB: Boston 6, Toronto 1

Toronto, Aug. 19: Clay Buchholz got the best of Toronto ace Roy Halladay by allowing a run through six innings Wednesday, carrying Boston to a 6-1 decision over the Blue Jays.

Toronto and Boston reportedly had lengthy trade discussions last month in a deal that would have sent Halladay to the Red Sox. The Blue Jays hoped to get Buchholz in the would-be deal, but Boston would not let go of the 25-year prospect.

Buchholz (2-3), making his seventh start of the season, allowed six hits and struck out four.

Halladay (13-6) coughed up five runs on eight hits in only five innings.

David Ortiz got Boston going with a solo homer in the second and the Red Sox got a two-run homer from Jason Bay in the fifth and a solo blast from Victor Martinez in the ninth.

MLB: Texas 3, Boston 1

Arlington, Texas July 22: The unlikely combination of Dustin Nippert and Doug Mathis befuddled Boston Wednesday and helped bring Texas a 3-1 win over the Red Sox.

Texas ran its winning streak to four by sweeping Boston in a three-game series.

The Red Sox have lost five straight.

Boston dropped two games behind the New York Yankees in the American League East and saw its advantage over Texas in the wild card chase reduced to 2 1/2 games.

Nippert (2-0), making only his fourth appearance of the season, was given an emergency start when Vicente Padilla developed flu-like symptoms.

The surprise starter held Boston to a run on five hits over 5 2/3 innings.

MLB: Boston 4, Toronto 1

Toronto, July 17: Clay Buchholz, in his first start of the season, allowed a lone run over 5 2/3 innings Friday to help Boston win its fourth straight game -- 4-1 over Toronto.

Buchholz (1-0) was called up from Class AAA Pawtucket to make the start and gave up only four hits with three strikeouts.

The Blue Jays produced a single hit against three Boston relievers. Jonathan Papelbon threw eight pitches while working a perfect ninth for his 24th save.

Boston managed just six hits, but one of them was a two-run homer by Kevin Youkilis in the first and another was a two-run double by David Ortiz in the fifth.
