MLS: San Jose 1, Philadelphia 0

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Chris Wondolowski scored in the 69th minute Wednesday and the San Jose Earthquakes boosted their playoff chances with a 1-0 victory over Philadelphia.

San Jose leaped past both Seattle and Colorado into fourth place in the Western Conference at 10-7-6.

The Earthquakes are trying to return to the playoffs for the first time since rejoining the league in 2008. San Jose won the MLS title in both 2001 and 2003 before folding following the 2005 season.

That franchise eventually relocated in Houston.

Wondolowski scored his ninth goal of the season, putting a shot past Brad Knighton off the first assist of the year from Arturo Alvarez.

MLS: Colorado 1, San Jose 1 (tie)

Commerce City, Colo., Sept. 24: Conor Casey scored on a penalty kick in second-half stoppage time Wednesday, allowing the Colorado Rapids to salvage a 1-1 tie with San Jose.

It was the second time in five days the Rapids had pulled out a tie against San Jose with a penalty kick just seconds before the end of the game.

The Earthquakes took the lead in the 67th minute on a penalty kick by Chris Wondolowski after the ball had bounced off the arm of a Colorado player in the penalty area.

Colorado was able to tie it when Omar Cummings was taken down in the area by Jason Hernandez. Casey came through with his 15th goal of the season.
