Jakubauskas on DL after line drive to head

Pittsburgh -- The Pittsburgh Pirates said pitcher Chris Jakubauskas was placed on the disabled list Sunday, one day after he was struck in the head by a line drive.

Jakubauskas was hit in the forehead by a line drive off the bat of the Houston Astros' Lance Berkman in the first inning of Saturday's game at Minute Maid Park.

He remained conscious and was carried off the field with an ice pack applied to his forehead.

The 31-year-old hurler was taken to Methodist Hospital in Houston and was kept there overnight. Doctors diagnosed a head contusion and concussion, the Pirates said.

Left-handed pitcher Brian Burres has been recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis to take Jakubauskas' spot on the roster.

MLB: Baltimore 12, Seattle 4

Seattle, July 8: Luke Scott had three hits and seven RBI Tuesday, fueling Baltimore's 12-4 romp over the Mariners in Seattle.

Scott had a single, triple and home run in the 11-hit Orioles attack. Nolan Reimold added another three RBI on two hits.

The Mariners led 3-2 after one inning of play in which the pitching on both side took its lumps.

Baltimore's Mark Hendrickson (4-4) picked up the win in relief of Jeremy Guthrie, who lasted 2 2/3 innings and gave up three runs on two hits and four walks.

Chris Jakubauskas (5-6) took the loss, giving up four runs on four hits 1 1/3 frames, after taking over for Erik Bedard in the fifth.

MLB: Seattle 7, Boston 6

Boston, July 3: Rob Johnson drove in two runs in the 11th inning with his third double of the game Friday, bringing the Seattle Mariners a 7-6 decision over Boston.

Seattle overcame an early two-run deficit and took a two-run lead into the bottom of the eighth before Nick Green forged a 5-5 tie with a two-run double.

The Mariners scored the decisive runs off Ramon Ramirez (5-3), who gave up a leadoff single to Franklin Gutierrez in the 11th and walked Ryan Langerhans.

Chris Woodward moved the runners up with a sacrifice and Johnson doubled them both home. He had also driven in a run in the fourth with a double.

MLB: Seattle 1, LA Angels 0

Seattle -- Chris Jakubauskas teamed with three relievers on a three-hitter Wednesday, lifting Seattle to a 1-0 triumph over the Los Angeles Angels.

Ken Griffey Jr. singled in the game's only run in the first inning and the contest then settled into a duel between Jakubauskas and Ervin Santana, who was making his second start of the season.

Santana (0-1), who opened the campaign on the disabled list with a sprained elbow, gave up three runs to Boston in a five-inning stint last week. He limited Seattle to a run on five hits over 6 2/3.

That was enough for the Mariners, however, who got outstanding relief efforts from Miguel Batista, Mark Lowe and David Aardsma.
