Chipper Jones has knee injury

Atlanta -- Atlanta's veteran third baseman Chipper Jones has a torn ligament in his left knee and could miss the rest of the season.

Jones, 38, was injured in the sixth inning of Tuesday's game while making a defensive play. His agent told The Atlanta Journal Constitution that an MRI indicted a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in Jones's left leg.

The newspaper said Jones may seek a second opinion but added, if the injury requires surgery, it could signal the end of Jones's career as he has hinted that this season -- his 17th in the major leagues -- may be his last as a player.

Braves Chipper Jones mulls retirement

Atlanta -- Chipper Jones is thinking about retiring after the season, Atlanta Braves Manager Bobby Cox said after meeting with the veteran third baseman Tuesday.

"The best I can say is he's planning on retiring after this year, but we won't know until he tells you guys," The Atlanta Journal-Constitution quoted Cox as saying.

Braves General Manager Frank Wren and team President John Schuerholz were also in on the meeting with Jones, the newspaper said.

Before heading into Turner Field for that meeting, the 38-year-old player told the Journal-Constitution retirement was on the agenda.

"It's obvious it's something I've been thinking about, and that's that," Jones said.
