Sat, 01/01/2011 - 10:36 by Roger Friedman
With exploding wells, shifting regulations, and uncertainty for investors, some players in the oil, gas, and consumable fuels field are teetering on the verge of collapse, while others are poised to profit. It's among the most-watched industries among those who have created a watchlist with the Fool, and today we're able to single out the one energy player that is garnering the most attention. |
The Wild African Energy Safari
Sun, 12/19/2010 - 10:02 by David Lee Smith
It's no secret that global oil production is spreading rapidly. For instance, with most areas of the U.S. offshore prohibited from drilling activity, and the rendering of permits in the Gulf of Mexico having slowed to a snail's pace, the world will increasingly be forced to look to the likes of Brazil and Africa for its needed supplies of black gold. |
Best Values in Oil and Gas
Fri, 12/17/2010 - 09:41 by Rex Moore
Study after study has shown that stocks with low price-to-earnings multiples significantly outperform high P/E stocks. Research from my favorite investing guru, NYU professor Aswath Damodaran, pegged the outperformance at anywhere from 9% to 12% per year, depending on the study period. That's big money we're talking about. |
The Lessons From This Week's $90 Oil Price
Sun, 12/12/2010 - 12:24 by David Lee Smith
There used to be a TV program called This Was the Week That Was, which looked for humor in the more off-the-wall events that had occurred during the past few days. As this week ends, it might be possible to put together such a show on the ups and downs of crude prices. |
Is Chevron a Sell?
Sat, 12/11/2010 - 07:13 by Jeremy Phillips
Should you sell Chevron (NYSE: CVX)today? The decision to sell a stock you've researched and followed for months or years is never easy. If you fall in love with your stock holdings, you risk becoming vulnerable to confirmation bias -- listening only to information that supports your theories, and rejecting any contradictions. |

In addition to maintaining this moratorium, the administration is also delaying two western and central Gulf lease sales currently scheduled for March and August 2011. This will give the Department of the Interior time to conduct thorough environmental impact studies. Next year could therefore be the first since 1965 to see no new lease sales. |
5 Superball Stocks
Mon, 11/29/2010 - 23:18 by Rich Smith
In my recurring Fool column, "Get Ready for the Bounce," we search for future winners in a pile of 52-week losers. But do we really need to sit around for a whole year, waiting for a fallen stock to bounce back? |
Is the Cash Machine at Chevron Running on Empty?
Fri, 11/12/2010 - 11:30 by Seth Jayson
Although business headlines still tout earnings numbers, many investors have moved past net earnings as a measure of a company's economic output. That's because earnings are very often less trustworthy than cash flow, since earnings are more open to manipulation based on dubious judgment calls. |

From Gross to Net at ExxonMobil
Thu, 09/16/2010 - 10:19 by Seth Jayson
Margins matter. The more ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why I check on my holdings' margins at least once a quarter. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, comparisons to sector peers and competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong ExxonMobil's competitive position could be. |
