MLB: Philadelphia 6, New York Yankees 1

New York -- Cliff Lee went the distance Wednesday and Philadelphia opened its bid for a second straight World Series title by beating the New York Yankees 6-1.

Lee did not allow a run until the ninth inning and that one was unearned. He struck out 10 while throwing 123 pitches in cool, often rainy weather.

Chase Utley hit two homers off Yankees ace CC Sabathia and the Phillies added two runs each in the eighth and ninth innings to take a 1-0 lead in the 105th World Series. New York will host Game 2 Thursday.

Philadelphia defeated the Yankees in a World Series game for the first time in franchise history. New York swept the Phillies in their only other championship meeting 59 years ago.

MLB: Florida 3, Philadelphia 0 (2nd game)

Miami, Sept. 22: Anibal Sanchez pitched eight shutout innings and Dan Uggla and Cody Ross hit solo home runs Tuesday to give the Florida Marlins a 3-0 win over Philadelphia.

MIAMI, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Anibal Sanchez pitched eight shutout innings and Dan Uggla and Cody Ross hit solo home runs Tuesday to give the Florida Marlins a 3-0 win over Philadelphia.

The win came in the second game of a doubleheader after Philadelphia won the first game 9-3.

Sanchez (3-7) allowed just two hits -- both to Chase Utley -- walked two and struck out seven for his first win in six starts. Leo Nunez got his 24th save with a perfect ninth.

Hanley Ramirez added two hits, including an RBI double.

MLB: Philadelphia 5, Washington 3

Washington, Sept. 8: Raul Ibanez hit two home runs and the Philadelphia Phillies overcame a shaky ninth inning by Brad Lidge Tuesday to beat the Washington Nationals 5-3.

The Phillies hit five solo home runs, including three in the seventh inning when Jayson Werth and Ibanez went back-to-back and Carlos Ruiz homered two batters later.

Ibanez and Chase Utley each hit their 30th home runs and joined teammates Werth and Ryan Howard as the only Phillies foursome to hit 30 or more homers in a season. It was the first time in 10 years that the Phillies have hit five solo home runs in a game.

Pedro Martinez (4-0) held the Nats to three runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Lidge loaded the bases in the ninth with one out before being pulled.

Philadelphia, Aug. 31: Joe Blanton held Atlanta to one run in seven innings Sunday and a costly Braves' error helped the Philadelphia Phillies to a 3-2 win.

Blanton (9-6) allowed three hits, walked four and struck out seven.

Chase Utley hit his 29th home run, Carlos Ruiz had two doubles and two RBI and Ryan Howard had two hits for the Phillies, who have won 10 of their last 14 games.

Brad Lidge picked up his 27th save.

Martin Prado had three hits, including a home run, for the Braves, who trail Philadelphia by eight games in the NL East and are 3 1/2 games back of the San Francisco Giants and the Colorado Rockies in the NL wild-car chase.

Philadelphia, Aug. 19: Jayson Werth hit two solo homers, and Cliff Lee pitched a complete game two-hitter Wednesday in Philadelphia's 8-1 win over Arizona.

Werth had three of Philadelphia's 12 hits, and his homers, in the fifth and the seventh, gave him 27 this season.

Ryan Howard hit his 31st, a three-run shot in the fifth.

Chase Utley hit a two-run, third-inning homer for the Phillies, who can cap a three-game sweep with a win Thursday.

Lee is 4-0 since joining the Phillies in a trade with Cleveland last month.

He surrendered a run and two hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts.

Arizona's run scored on Stephen Drew's fourth-inning sacrifice fly.

MLB: Philadelphia 6, Florida 5

Miami, July 18: Chase Utley and Jayson Werth produced RBI singles in the 12th inning Friday that vaulted the Philadelphia Phillies to a 6-5 win over Florida.

Utley hit a two-run homer in the first but the Phillies let a three-run lead get away in the late innings before winning their seventh straight. They increased their lead in the National League East to six games over both the Marlins and Atlanta.

Burke Badenhop (5-4) took the mound for his second inning of work in the 12th but gave up a leadoff single to Jimmy Rollins.

Shane Victorino bunted Rollins to second and Rollins scored on Utley's base hit up the middle. Utley moved to second on a ground out by Ryan Howard and, after Paul Bako was walked intentionally, Werth singled Utley home.

MLB: Philadelphia 8, Pittsburgh 7

Philadelphia, July 12: Paul Bako's second hit Saturday, a ninth-inning RBI single, boosted the Philadelphia Phillies to an 8-7 victory against Pittsburgh.

Bako's second RBI capped a five-run rally with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, when Philadelphia overcame a 7-3 deficit. One of three hits for Ryan Howard was a three-run homer with one out in the ninth, his 22nd this season.

Raul Ibanez had two hits and one RBI, while both Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins had two hits for the Phillies, who have won four in a row and eight of nine.

The winner was reliever Tyler Walker (1-0), who pitched one inning of scoreless relief.

MLB: Philadelphia 9, Cincinnati 6

Philadelphia, July 9: Chase Utley started a Philadelphia comeback with an inside-the-park home run Thursday and the Phillies went on to down Cincinnati 9-6.

Philadelphia defeated the Reds for the second straight night, overcoming an early three-run deficit and finally taking the lead for good with a four-run fifth inning. Utley's home run, his 20th of the season, came in the third inning and Philadelphia tied the game in the fourth on a two-run single by Shane Victorino -- who was named Thursday to the final spot on the NL All-Star roster.

After the Reds regained a 6-4 advantage in the fifth, Philadelphia moved back in front in the bottom half of the inning with four runs off Micah Owings (6-9).

MLB: Cincinnati 4, Philadelphia 3

Philadelphia, July 7: Ramon Hernandez singled home the winning run in the top of the ninth Tuesday to give Cincinnati a 4-3 victory over Philadelphia.

After trailing 3-0, the Reds battled back with two home runs by Brandon Phillips.

Philadelphia went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base.

David Weathers (1-1) pitched one inning for the win. Francisco Cordero pitched a scoreless ninth for his 21st save.

Brad Lidge (0-4) took the loss after giving up two hits and a walk in the ninth.

Joey Votto doubled down the right-field line to begin the decisive inning, moved to third on a bunt and scored when Hernandez singled to center.

MLB: Philadelphia 22, Cincinnati 1

Philadelphia, July 6: Chase Utley hit a three-run homer in a 10-run first inning Monday that started the Philadelphia Phillies to a 22-1 rout over the Cincinnati Reds.

Utley, Shane Victorino and Greg Dobbs each homered in the game's opening inning, in which 13 Philadelphia players batted. Victorino hit a two-run shot, had four RBI, scored five runs and was 4-for-5 with a walk. Dobbs had a two-run homer, four hits and scored twice and Utley also had an RBI single.

Jayson Werth had a grand slam during a six-run eighth inning and had five RBI in all. Jimmy Rollins scored four times, walked twice and was 3-for-4 with an RBI.

MLB: Philadelphia 7, New York Mets 2

Philadelphia, July 3: Chase Utley helped Philadelphia jump to a big lead with an RBI in each of the first two innings Friday and the Phillies went on to down the New York Mets 7-2.

Philadelphia returned home after a 3-6 road trip and promptly opened a key series with the Mets by scoring seven runs in the first three innings.

The early surge allowed the Phillies to regain a one-game lead over Florida in the National League East. A New York victory would have moved the Mets into a share of the top spot, but the loss dropped them two games back.

Utley singled in a run in the first and Greg Dobbs had a two-run base hit later in the inning. Utley added a sacrifice fly in the second and Jayson Werth hit a solo homer as part of Philadelphia's three-run third.
