MLB: New York Yankees 3, Oakland 2

Oakland, Calif. Aug. 20: Mariano Rivera needed just seven pitches to record his 36th save Wednesday and preserve a 3-2 win for the New York Yankees over Oakland.

Chad Gaudin made his first start with the Yankees after being acquired from San Diego Aug. 6, but he did not figure in the decision.

New York had a 3-2 lead going into the fifth, but Gaudin loaded the bases with one out in that inning and was removed in favor of Alfredo Aceves.

Aceves (8-1) got Kurt Suzuki to ground into a double play to end the inning and eventually worked 2 1/3 innings to get the win.

MLB: San Diego 11, Milwaukee 7

San Diego, Aug. 1: A two-run homer by Will Venable in the fourth inning Friday started a San Diego comeback that brought the Padres an 11-7 victory over Milwaukee.

The Brewers produced a seven-run second inning for a six-run lead, but they could not hold it while trying to win three games in a row for the first time in more than a month.

San Diego captured its fourth straight, thanks to a 17-hit attack.

Venable's homer was followed in the fourth by a two-run double from David Eckstein and the Padres closed to within one in the following inning on a solo homer by Kyle Blanks.

San Diego then took the lead with a three-run sixth. Oscar Salazar doubled home the tying run and scored the go-ahead tally on a sacrifice fly by Eckstein.

San Diego, July 4: Matt Kemp finished off a five-run first with a two-run double Friday and the Los Angeles Dodgers welcomed back Manny Ramirez by downing San Diego 6-3.

Ramirez played for the first time since May 6, having served a 50-game suspension for violating baseball's drug policy. He had four plate appearances and did not get the ball out of the infield -- walking in the first inning, grounding out to second in the second, grounding out to shortstop in the fourth and popping out to second in the sixth.

Ramirez was replaced in left field by Juan Pierre after the sixth inning.
The big first inning made a winner out of Hiroki Kuroda (4-5), who lasted 5 1/3 while giving up three runs on four hits.

The critical error came in the fifth inning and neither team could score the rest of the way, resulting in the Mariners grabbing their second straight inter-league win over the Padres.

Gutierrez opened the fifth with a walk off Chad Gaudin (2-6) and moved to second on a sacrifice by pitcher Garrett Olson. Ichiro Suzuki's single advanced Gutierrez to third, from where he scored when Hundley threw wildly to first trying to pick off Suzuki.

The other three Seattle runs came in the fourth, when Ken Griffey Jr. doubled home Russell Branyan and scored ahead of a home run by Jose Lopez.
