New York -- New York Yankees ace left-hander CC Sabathia will have surgery on his right knee this week, the team announced Wednesday.
The Yankees said Sabathia has a meniscus tear in his knee and will go under the knife Friday in a procedure to be performed by Dr. Christopher Ahmad, the team's physician, MLB.com reported.
Sabathia will begin therapy immediately after the operation and resume his normal preparations for spring training in about three to six weeks.
Sabathia, who was nearly unhittable in the 2009 post-season when New York took its 27th World Series title, was largely ineffective in this year's playoffs. The lefty yielded 10 earned runs and 22 hits over 16 innings in three starts.

New York, Oct. 23: Andy Pettitte hopes to carry the New York Yankees into the World Series and set a record as well Saturday in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series.
The Yankees, owning a 3-2 in the best-of-seven series, will host the Los Angeles Angels -- hoping to avoid a deciding game and a potential collapse.
New York let a 6-4 lead over the Angels in Game 5 slip away Thursday and then failed to take advantage of a bases-loaded situation in the ninth inning. That left the Angels with a 7-6 victory.
The weather's questionable for Saturday's game. Forecasts call for a 100 percent chance of rain during the afternoon and evening.
