Suarez Navarro advances in Linz, Austria

Linz, Austria -- Fourth-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain was an opening-round winner Monday at the Generali Ladies Linz tennis event.

Suarez Navarro defeated Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik 6-2, 6-4.

In other first-day action, Poland's Urszula Radwanska beat Yvonne Meusburger of Austria 7-6 (8-6), 6-1; Romanian Ioana Raluca Olaru beat Czech Lucie Hradecka 6-2, 2-6, 6-1; and Czech Petra Kvitova beat German Andrea Petkovic 6-1, 6-4.

This week's top seeds are Italian Flavia Pennetta, Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska and Belgian teenager Yanina Wickmayer.

Radwanska was last week's Beijing runner-up to Russian star Svetlana Kuznetsova. Wickmayer was a U.S. Open semifinalist last month.

Malek gets first-round upset win

Bad Gastein, Austria -- Fifth-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro was upset in three sets Monday at the Gastein Ladies tennis tournament in Austria.

Suarez Navarro was the only seeded player on Monday's first-round schedule but she fell to Tatjana Malek 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 in a tight match. Malek won only four more points than Suarez Navarro over the course of the match but used four service breaks in the third set to get to the second round.

There were only two other matches Monday. Andrea Petkovic topped Sandra Kloesel 6-4, 6-3 in one and Ioana Raluca Olaru rallied for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 win over Marta Domachowska in the other.

Schiavone, Bammer advance in Prague

Prague, Czech Republic July 15: Francesca Schiavone and Sybille Bammer, the top two seeds in the Prague Open, earned quarterfinal berths Wednesday.

Schiavone, seeded No. 1, cruised past Polona Hercog 6-2, 6-2. Bammer was a 6-1, 6-1 victor over Alla Kudryavtseva.

Also advancing were Carla Suarez Navarro, who posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, and Lucie Hrdecka, who fought off Karolina Sprem 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Hradecka will meet Bammer in the quarterfinals Friday.

Third-seeded Iveta Benesova will play her second-round match Thursday.
