Report: Crawford going to Red Sox

Boston -- Free-agent outfielder Carl Crawford has agreed to a seven-year deal with the Boston Red Sox, the Boston Globe reported Wednesday.

The report said the contract would be worth $142 million.

Crawford has been in the major leagues for nine seasons, all of that time spent with Tampa Bay. He has been a member of the American League All-Star team four times.

Arguably the best player in the history of the Rays, Crawford batted .307 during the 2010 season with career highs in home runs (19), RBI (90) and runs scored (110). He won a Gold Glove award for the first time in his career and stole 47 bases.

Crawford has a lifetime .296 batting average with 104 home runs and 592 RBI.

MLB: Tampa Bay 4, Baltimore 3

St. Petersburg, Fla. -- Carl Crawford smacked a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning Tuesday, giving the Tampa Bay Rays a 4-3 triumph over Baltimore.

Tampa Bay's winning rally started when Sean Rodriguez singled with one out off Orioles reliever Mike Gonzalez (0-1) and moved to third on Kelly Shoppach's double. Jason Bartlett was intentionally walked to load the bases and Crawford stroked the game-winner.

Evan Longoria homered, Bartlett collected two hits with an RBI while Ben Zobrist and Dioner Navarro each added a pair of hits in the Rays' season-opening win.

Rafael Soriano (1-0) was credited with the win after pitching a scoreless ninth.

The Orioles got homers from Adam Jones, Luke Scott and Matt Wieters in the defeat.

MLB: Tampa Bay 7, Texas 6

Arlington, Texas, Sept. 27: Fernando Perez drove in the game-winning run Sunday with a suicide squeeze bunt, leading the Tampa Bay Rays to a 7-6 win over Texas.

The bunt knocked in Evan Longoria with one out in the top of the ninth. Ben Zobrist led Tampa Bay with two hits, both two-run singles, giving him four RBI.

Carl Crawford had three hits and one RBI, and Jason Bartlett had two hits for the Rays, who have split their last six games.

The winner was reliever Randy Choate (1-0).

Lance Cormier earned his second save.

MLB: Tampa Bay 3, Toronto 1

St. Petersburg, Sept. 20 -- Carl Crawford's two-run homer Sunday led the Tampa Bay Rays to a 3-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays and a three-game sweep.

The Rays won 14 of 18 against the Blue Jays this season.

Crawford's homer, his 14th, gave Tampa Bay a 2-0 lead with no outs in the bottom of the first.

Willy Aybar hit a solo homer, Pat Burrell had three hits and Ben Zobrist and B.J. Upton had two hits apiece for the Rays, who have won four in a row.

Winner David Price (9-7), the first of six Tampa Bay pitchers, gave up a run and just three hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Edwin Encarnacion's fourth-inning homer accounted for the only run for the Blue Jays, who have lost four straight.

MLB: Tampa Bay 8, Boston 5

St. Petersburg, Fla. Sept. 2: Pat Burrell singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth Wednesday and Evan Longoria soon added a two-run homer, launching Tampa Bay to an 8-5 win over Boston.

The Red Sox, whose four-game winning streak ended, saw their lead in the American League wild-card race trimmed to 2 1/2 games over Texas. Tampa Bay is five games back.

Facing a 5-4 deficit in the top of the eighth, Boston loaded the bases with one out and scored the tying run on a wild pitch by reliever J.P. Howell.

Howell then struck out Alex Gonzalez and Jacob Ellsbury to prevent further damage and the Rays regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning.

MLB: Tampa Bay 10, Kansas City 4

St. Petersburg, Fla. -- Carl Crawford drove in three runs and Jason Bartlett knocked in a pair Monday in Tampa Bay's 10-4 victory over Kansas City.

Crawford and Bartlett both finished with three hits, with Bartlett also getting a walk but coming up a homer short of the cycle.

Willy Aybar homered twice and Carlos Pena hit a two-run single as the Rays won for the fourth time in their last six games and pulled within 5 1/2 games of the first-place New York Yankees in the American League East.

Winner Scott Kazmir (6-6) gave up three runs on six hits. He struck out five in six-plus innings.

Miguel Olivo and Yuniesky Betancourt each went 2-for-4 with a run batted in for the Royals, who have lost five of six.

MLB: Tampa Bay 8, Kansas City 2

St. Petersburg, Fla. July 31: A three-run homer by Carlos Pena in the first inning Friday ignited the Tampa Bay Rays to an 8-2 whipping of Kansas City.

The Royals, owners of the worst record in the American League and the second-worst mark in the majors, lost their third straight.

Pena's 26th homer of the season came after Sidney Ponson had given up singles to B.J. Upton and Carl Crawford. Ponson (1-7) allowed seven runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Tampa Bay took a 4-1 lead into the fifth and broke the game open in that inning with three runs.

MLB: Tampa Bay 6, N.Y. Yankees 2

St. Petersburg, Fla. July 28: B.J. Upton and Carl Crawford each had two hits, an RBI, and a run scored Tuesday to help the Tampa Bay Rays beat the New York Yankees 6-2.

Scott Kazmir (5-6) gave up one run on five hits in seven-plus innings to earn the win for the Rays.

Evan Longoria had a solo homer, and Dioner Navarro and Jason Bartlett each had an RBI for Tampa Bay.

Losing pitcher CC Sabathia (10-7) allowed six runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Hideki Matsui had two RBI for the Yankees, who have won 10 of their last 12 games.

MLB: Chicago White Sox 4, Tampa Bay 3

Chicago, July 21: Paul Konerko hit a three-run homer Monday and the Chicago White Sox survived a shaky ninth inning to defeat Tampa Bay 4-3.

Chicago's Gavin Floyd (8-6) struck out seven in as many innings while allowing three hits -- all solo home runs.

Scott Podsednik was 3- for-3 with a walk and two runs scored for the White Sox.

David Price (3-4) gave up four runs on eight hits and is winless in nine career road appearances on the road, including six starts.

Carl Crawford, Ben Zobrist and Evan Longoria all homered for the Rays, who suffered just their third loss in their last 10 games.

MLB: Tampa Bay 8, Kansas City 7

Kansas City, Mo. July 18: Evan Longoria capped a Tampa Bay rally with a two-run homer in the eighth Friday, lifting the Rays to an 8-7 decision over Kansas City.

The Royals took a 6-2 lead through three innings, but the Rays came back to win for the fifth time in seven games.

Tampa Bay got within one on Pat Burrell's two-run blast in the seventh and Longoria gave the Rays the lead in the eighth when he hit his 18th homer of the season.

Carl Crawford reached on a two-out single off Juan Cruz (3-3) and Longoria followed by hitting the first pitch from Cruz out to left.

That made a winner out of Joe Nelson (3-0), who worked the seventh inning. J.P. Howell earned his seventh save with a perfect ninth.

MLB: American 4, National 3

St. Louis, July 15: Mariano Rivera set an All-Star saves record with his fourth Tuesday and the American League once again beat the National League, this time 4-3.

Rivera broke a tie for most All-Star saves with Dennis Eckersley.

Adam Jones drove in the winning run in the eighth inning after Curtis Granderson tripled off the base of the left-field fence.

The American League is now 12-0-1 in the last 13 All-Star games and will have home field in the World Series. The American League's unbeaten streak is the longest in the game's history.

Jonathan Papelbon (1-0) got the win thanks to Carl Crawford's homer-saving catch in left. Crawford's catch earned him the All-Star Game MVP Award.

MLB: Tampa Bay 10, Toronto 9

St. Petersburg, Fla. July 8: Ben Zobrist's fourth RBI of the game, coming on a two-out single in the ninth inning Wednesday, lifted Tampa Bay to a wild 10-9 win over Toronto.

The Rays twice let a three-run lead get away before coming through in the ninth, winning their second straight on the heels of a four-game losing streak.

Tampa Bay blew a 5-2 lead when Toronto scored three times in the fourth, but the Rays came back in their half of the fourth with a three-run homer from Zobrist.

The Rays were in front 9-6 going into the seventh, only to have Scott Rolen, Kevin Millar and Alex Rios drive in runs to again tie it up.
