Hurricanes get White, Sutter from Flames

Raleigh, N.C. -- The Carolina Hurricanes have acquired defenseman Ian White and forward Brett Sutter from the Calgary Flames, the teams announced Wednesday.

In exchange, Carolina sent defenseman Anton Babchuk and forward Tom Kostopoulos to the Flames, Hurricanes President and General Manager Jim Rutherford said.

White, 26, played only 43 regular-season games with Calgary after the Flames obtained him in the Jan. 31 multi-player deal that saw former Norris Trophy finalist Dion Phaneuf sent to Toronto. He had two goals and four assists in 16 games this season after posting 13 goals and 25 assists last year.

Calgary Flames jump queue for flu vaccine

Calgary -- Allowing the NHL's Calgary Flames players and families to get H1N1 flu shots early has cost an Alberta Health Services manager his job, officials said.

The provincial agency announced Wednesday it had fired the unidentified mid-level manager for allowing the vaccinations for the hockey players and their families last week, the Calgary Sun reported Thursday. Further disciplinary action for other AHS employees was also possible, officials said.

Canada's largest-ever mass inoculation program ran into a vaccine shortage last week as tens of thousands of people considered low-risk for acquiring H1N1 jammed clinics.

NHL:Calgary 3, Dallas 2 (OT)

Dallas -- Jarome Iginla's overtime goal, his second goal of the game, gave the Calgary Flames a 3-2 win Wednesday over the Dallas Stars.

Iginla won it with a slapshot less than two minutes into the extra session.

Calgary's Daymond Langkow had tied the score in the final minute of regulation. Iginla, who assisted on the Langkow score, got his other goal in the second period.

Curtis McElhinney stopped 38 shots for the Flames.

Loui Eriksson and James Neal registered the Stars' goals.

Marty Turco -- who had sat out two games with flu-like symptoms -- stopped 20 for Dallas, which has lost three straight games.

Calgary, Alberta -- The Calgary Flames named Brent Sutter their new coach Tuesday.

Sutter, who resigned this off-season from his post with the New Jersey Devils, will have former NHLers Ryan McGill, Dave Lowry and Jamie McLennan as his assistant coaches.

Sutter, whose brother Darryl is the Flames' general manager, had a 97-56-11 record over the last two seasons as coach of the Devils. He also spent eight seasons coaching the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League prior to switching to the NHL.

Sutter, 47, spent 18 years as a player with the New York Islanders and Blackhawks from 1980-98. He scored 829 points in 1,111 games.
