Cal Clutterbuck

NHL: Minnesota 4, Tampa Bay 1

Tampa, Fla. -- Cal Clutterbuck, John Madden and Antti Miettinen each scored in the first period Sunday and the Minnesota Wild went on to down Tampa Bay 4-1.

Clutterbuck, who left the game in the third period with an upper-body injury, scored on a power play 7:16 into the frame to break a scoreless tie.

After Martin St. Louis knotted it with his seventh of the season, Madden connected on an assist from Martin Havlat and Miettinen scored with 30 seconds remaining for a 3-1 advantage.

Eric Nystrom also found the net and Niklas Backstrom turned aside 37-of-38 shots for the Wild, who salvaged one win on a three-game southeastern road swing.

NHL: Minnesota 3, Columbus 2

Columbus, Ohio -- Cal Clutterbuck netted the go-ahead goal and Brent Burns scored twice on the power play Saturday in the Minnesota Wild's 3-2 win over Columbus.

Clutterbuck's tally midway through the third period helped lift Minnesota to only its fifth win at 18 games at Nationwide Arena.

Mutt Cullen found Burns all alone at the side of the net 8:49 into the game for a 1-0 lead and the Minnesota defenseman's second goal with less than 6 minutes left in the middle frame forged a 2-2 tie.

Back-up goalie Jose Theodore logged his first win as a member of the Wild, turning aside 35-of-37 shots, including 15 saves in the second period.

Wild sign Clutterbuck to 3-year extension

St. Paul, Minn. -- The Minnesota Wild have signed forward Cal Clutterbuck to a three-year contract extension, team officials said Thursday.

The new pact keeps Clutterbuck from becoming a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

The news was well-received by Wild fans, who have adopted the second-year pro as a favorite because of his hitting. He leads the NHL in hits delivered this year and set a single-season record last year with 356 hits.

In 134 career games he has 23 goals and 13 assists for the Wild.

"I couldn't be happier," said Clutterbuck. "There is no other place I would want to be. I love playing here. The team is in really good shape. This is exactly where I want to be for at least another three years."

NHL: Minnesota 3, Dallas 2

St. Paul, Minn. -- The Minnesota Wild notched its third win in four games Saturday, edging the Dallas Stars 3-2.

Defenseman Marek Zidlicky had a goal and an assist for the Wild, while Cal Clutterbuck and Mikko Koivu scored goals to back the 19-save goaltending of Niklas Backstrom in the win.

The Stars, meanwhile, dropped their fourth game in five. Dallas was led by Loui Eriksson, who scored twice in the loss.

The Wild set the tone 9:46 into the game while shorthanded when Clutterbuck scored, followed seven minutes later by Koivu's goal.

Eriksson's second marker of the second period tied it for Dallas, but Zidlicky's tally put the Wild on top to stay with 1:48 to go in the period.

NHL: Nashville 4, Minnesota 3

St. Paul, Minn. -- Jerred Smithson's shorthanded goal put Nashville in front midway through the third period Wednesday and the Predators held on to defeat Minnesota 4-3.

Nashville won for the fourth time in 11 games this year despite blowing a two-goal lead. The Predators have captured two out of three after losing six in a row.

Pekka Rinne got the win in relief by stopping all 12 shots he saw over the final 37 minutes. Dan Ellis was replaced in the second period after giving up three goals in a span of less than 2 minutes.

Those goals by Brent Burns, Cal Clutterbuck and Owen Nolan gave Minnesota a 3-2 lead but Nashville tied it 6:44 into the second on Mike Santorelli's first goal of the season.

NHL: Minnesota 3, Carolina 2 (OT)

Minneapolis -- Cal Clutterbuck came off the injured reserve list Saturday and scored the game-winning goal in Minnesota's 3-2 overtime win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

Clutterbuck, who had missed the last five games with a sprained ankle, backhanded the winning goal at 1:55 past Cam Ward, who was sprawled on the ice after making the save on Greg Zanon's shot.

Andrew Brunette and Kyle Brodziak scored the other two Minnesota goals. Niklas Backstrom had 21 saves on 23 shots.

Ward faced 29 shots for the Hurricanes, who have lost all six of their road games thus far.

Carolina took a 1-0 lead at 10:32 of the first period on a power-play goal by Sergei Samsonov, but the Wild tied it on Brunette's power-play goal with 7:08 to play in the period.
