Buffalo Bills

NFL: Buffalo 13, Cleveland 6

Orchard Park, N.Y. -- Ryan Fitzpatrick hooked up with David Nelson on a 11-yard pass to provide the game's only touchdown and the Buffalo Bills edged Cleveland 13-6 Sunday.

Fitzpatrick's TD pass came early in the second quarter and Rian Lindell kicked a pair of field goals for Buffalo (3-10), which held the Browns to only 187 yards of offense and forced three turnovers.

Fitzpatrick went 14-of-23 passing for 142 yards and no interceptions and Fred Jackson rushed 29 times for 112 yards for the Bills.

Jake Delhomme completed 12-of-20 pass attempts for a mere 86 yards and was intercepted once for Cleveland (5-8).

Payton Hillis ran the ball 21 times for 108 yards and made four grabs for 10 yards but lost a pair of fumbles in the loss.

NFL: Buffalo 14, Detroit 12

Orchard Park, N.Y. -- Fred Jackson scored rushing and receiving touchdowns Sunday and the Buffalo Bills won their first game of the year, 14-12 over Detroit.

Jackson ran for 133 yards, taking over the Bills' rushing game after C.J. Spiller was removed from the contest with a hamstring injury.

Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for 146 yards and a touchdown on 12-of-24 passing for the Bills (1-8), whose 0-8 start was their worst since an 0-11 beginning to the 1984 season.

The Lions roared back with 14 seconds remaining in the game, pulling to within 14-12 on Calvin Johnson's 20-yard touchdown reception from Shaun Hill. But the Lions couldn't convert the ensuing 2-point conversion try and instead logged their NFL-record 25th straight road loss.

Shawn Nelson of Bills suspended 4 games

New York -- Buffalo Bills tight end Shawn Nelson has been suspended for four games for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy, the league announced Friday.

Nelson will be allowed to practice with the team and play in pre-season games but cannot play in the Bills' first four regular-season contests -- against Miami, Green Bay, the New England Patriots and New York Jets -- the league said.

The 6-foot-5 second-year player will be eligible to play in the Bills' game against the Jacksonville Jaguars Oct. 10.

Nelson caught 17 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown last season.

Former Bills lineman Schobel retires

Buffalo, N.Y. -- Former Buffalo Bills defensive end Aaron Schobel said Monday he has decided to retire from professional football.

Schobel told the Bills' official Web site he is hanging up his spikes after being released from the team this month. Schobel indicated he will file his retirement papers soon and won't listen if a team calls about playing again.

The 32-year-old two-time Pro Bowl selection played his entire nine-year for Buffalo after being taken by the Bills in the second round of the 2001 draft out of Texas Christian.

He recorded 10 sacks and 56 tackles in 16 games last season while racking up 483 tackles, 78 sacks and three interceptions in his 133-game career.

Tree carving stolen from Bills' stadium

Orchard Park, N.Y. -- Officials with the Buffalo Bills say a tree carving of former running back Thurman Thomas was stolen from outside Ralph Wilson Stadium.

The 8 1/2-foot-tall wood statue, created by Carvings for a Cause from trees destroyed by a snowstorm, was unveiled to the public Sunday and remained outside the stadium during the game against the Cleveland Browns, The Buffalo News reported Tuesday.

However, officials said the carving was noticed to have disappeared Monday when it was to be moved to Sahlen's Sports Park, which sponsored the carving by chainsaw master Rick Pratt.

"I've never had anybody steal a carving," Carvings for a Cause founder Therese Forton-Barnes said. "They weigh anywhere from 1,000 to 2,000 pounds."

Hall of Fame ceremony kicks off NFL season

Anton, Ohio Aug. 7: Bob Hayes, whose world-class sprinter's speed helped revolutionize his sport, will be among those inducted Saturday into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremonies on the steps of the Hall of Fame will precede by one day the first of the 332 preseason, regular season and playoff games that will make up the 2009 National Football League campaign.

Buffalo and Tennessee will play in the Hall of Fame Game Sunday. The season will end Feb. 7 with the playing of Super Bowl XLIV in Miami.

Because of his speed, Hayes required double coverage on almost every play during his days as a wide receiver with the Dallas Cowboys. His last game was 34 years ago. Hayes died in 2002.
