COL BKB: UNLV 88, Brigham Young 74

Las Vegas -- Tre'Von Willis scored a game-high 33 points Saturday, leading Nevada-Las Vegas to an 88-74 Mountain West upset of 12th-ranked Brigham Young.

UNLV streaked to a 15-2 lead, with Willis capping a 15-0 spurt on two free throws with 14:40 left in the first half.

The lead was 56-34 at the break in a game BYU led only once -- 2-0 on Jimmer Fredette's game-opening layup.

BYU's 79-61 lead on a Willis layup with 6:30 left proved insurmountable for the Cougars.

Matt Shaw scored 13 with five rebounds, while Oscar Bellfield added 12 points for the Rebels (19-4, 7-2), who have won five straight.

Fredette led BYU with 21 points, six assists and seven rebounds.

Alabama grabbing poll attention

Mclean, Va., Oct. 12 Alabama narrowed the distance between itself and No. 1 Florida and No. 2 Texas in the USA Today Coaches college football poll.S

The Crimson Tide (6-0) increased its first-place mentions to five ballots in the poll released Monday, four more than last week but Alabama remained ranked No. 3. All of those first-place votes came from Florida (5-0), which lost the votes despite a win over former No. 4 Louisiana State.

Florida has 53 of the 59 first-place votes. Texas (5-0), for the third consecutive week, is No. 1 on one ballot.

COL FB: Brigham Young 42, Colorado St 23

Provo, Utah, Sept. 26: Harvey Unga rushed for 113 yards and three touchdowns Saturday to lead 20th-ranked Brigham Young to a 42-23 win over Colorado State.

Max Hall completed 18-of-29 passes for 241 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Cougars (3-1, 1-0 MWC), who scored 21 points in the first quarter with the help of two interceptions and a blocked punt.

Grant Stucker connected on 30-of-50 passes for 372 yards with two TDs and a pair of interceptions for the Rams (3-1, 0-1). Tyson Liggett caught 11 passes for 156 yards and a TD.
