Karina Smirnoff, Brad Penny engaged

Las Vegas -- Karina Smirnoff confirmed her engagement to baseball pitcher Brad Penny and says her future husband popped the question more than a month ago.

The "Dancing With the Stars" contestant told People that Penny got down on one knee at a restaurant and presented her with a 4 1/2 carat diamond ring.

"We kept it quiet because my family is in New York and Brad's family is in Oklahoma so we kind of wanted them to come out and celebrate and be a family first before we let the cat out of the bag," Smirnoff said.

People said Sunday that Smirnoff was showing off the frock this weekend at a party at the tony Tao Las Vegas nightclub. Penny wasn't there, but had a diamond necklace delivered to the event as an apology for his absence.

Cards place P Penny on disabled list

St. Louis -- St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Brad Penny has been put on the 15-day disabled list with a back muscle strain, the team said Saturday.

Penny was taken out of Friday's 9-5 victory over the Los Angeles Angels after he hit a third-inning grand slam, only the 11th ever by a Cardinals pitcher. Penny made some warmup throws prior to the fourth inning, but couldn't go on.

Penny has complied a 3-4 record with a 3.23 earned run average in nine starts. He came to St. Louis after splitting the 2009 campaign between Boston and San Francisco.

After making the move, the Cardinals recalled pitcher P.J. Walters from Triple-A Memphis.
