Dell asks employees to swap their BlackBerrys with Venue Pro

Dell is looking to put its new smartphone in place of the long-established BlackBerry, and is starting with its own employees. The computer maker is going to replace 25,000 BlackBerry devices used by its employees with Windows 7-running Dell smartphones, it confirmed on Friday.

Dell cuts BlackBerry to promote its own

Round Rock, Texas -- U.S. computer giant Dell said it would offer 25,000 employees Dell Venue Pro phones in exchange for their BlackBerry phones made by Research In Motion.

Some of the BlackBerry phones Dell employees carry were company-issued, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

Dell said it would save money with the switch, explaining it was negotiating a deal with T-Mobile USA to buy service in bulk with unused minutes that would have some carryover value.

Dell also said it would begin to offer a plan to other business customers to have them switch from BlackBerry to the Dell Venue Pro, which runs on a Windows Phone 7 operating system.

Research In Motion senior vice president of corporate marketing Mark Guibert said Dell was using fuzzy math.

Gasquet takes tight second-round win

Mete -- No. 4-seeded Richard Gasquet won a pair of tie-breakers in taking a three-set decision Wednesday at the Moselle Open tennis tournament in France.

Gasquet advanced to the tournament quarterfinals with a 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-3) victory over Paul-Henri Mathieu. Gasquet pounded 17 aces and lost only 25 points in his 17 service games but the match was in doubt until he won the last five points of the day.

Both players won 108 points overall and Mathieu suffered the rarity of dropping a match without losing serve. He saved the only break point he faced in the 2 1/2-hour match.

Seventh-seeded Tommy Robredo also won a second-round match, taking care of Denis Istomin 6-4, 6-2 behind a pair of service breaks in each set.
