Some Texas moms taking placentas home

Austin, Texas -- An Austin, Texas, hospital official says an increasing number of women are braving lengthy paperwork and fees to take their placentas home after giving birth.

Eileen Dunne, director of waste management for St. David's North Austin Medical Center, said placentas are considered medical waste under the Texas Administrative Code, so mothers who want to keep them have to file paperwork at a courthouse and pay fees of as much as $300.

Dunne told the Austin American-Statesman a growing number of applications to keep placentas have been crossing her desk.

"All of a sudden, it seems like one or two a month this year, which is definitively more than the one or two I'd see every couple of years," Dunne said.

Study: Blind still use brain visual center

Washington -- People who have been blind from birth use a region of the brain normally involved in vision to refine their sense of sound and touch, a U.S. study has found.

Researchers led by neuroscientists at Georgetown University Medical Center say this helps explain why the blind have such advanced perception of these senses, abilities that far exceed those of people who can see, a Georgetown release says.

The study suggests the different functional attributes that make up vision, such as analysis of space, patterns and motion, still exist in the visual cortex of blind individuals.

The Badminton World Federation handed Zhou a two-year ban September 1 after a drug test in June indicated traces of the anabolic agent clenbuterol in her system.
Zhou insists she was unaware of using any medication that contained the prohibited substance though she admitted buying medicine for a cold during a badminton tournament in Southeast Asia before failing the drug test.
