Rodriguez hit with civil suit over beating

New York -- New York Mets pitcher Francisco Rodriguez, facing a criminal charge of assault, has been hit with a civil suit stemming from the same incident, officials said.

Rodriguez, 28, accused of viciously beating his girlfriend's father, Carlos Pena, at Citi Field following a Mets loss in August, was served with legal papers for the civil suit as he entered the Queens Supreme Court for a hearing on the criminal case, the New York Daily News reported Thursday.

A lawyer representing Pena says his client has been in and out of doctor's offices to treat injuries to his "head, brain, face, neck and back."

The suit filed in Bronx Supreme Court seeks unspecified damages for the "extreme and outrageous" beating.
