Rumsfeld honored, Emanuel snubbed

Winnetka, Ill. -- An Illinois high school's first-ever "Hall of Honor" awards for alumni gave accolades to Donald Rumsfeld and actor Rainn Wilson but snubbed Rahm Emanuel.

The New Trier Township High School in Winnetka released its list of honorees Wednesday, including former Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld and "The Office" star Wilson, but missing from the "Hall of Honor" were school alumni Rahm Emanuel, former chief of staff to President Barack Obama and now a Chicago mayoral candidate, and actress Ann-Margret, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Thursday.

'Winter’s Bone' wins best film at Gotham Film Awards

Debra Granik's 'Winter's Bone,' has won the best feature film award at the 20th Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards Monday in New York.

Black, Gardenhire voted managers awards

New York -- San Diego's Bud Black and Minnesota's Ron Gardenhire have been voted the managers of the year for their respective leagues, it was announced Wednesday.

Tom Kelly, who won in 1991, is the only other Minnesota manager to win the award.

Black edged Cincinnati's Dusty Baker by one point in winning the National League manager of the year award.

The Padres finished 90-72 and in second place behind the San Francisco Giants in the NL West after being a consensus pick to finish last in the division. San Diego led the division much of the season despite fielding the second-lowest paid lineup in baseball.

He joins Bruce Bochy, now the manager of the Giants, as the only Padres leader to be manager of the year. Bochy won in San Diego in 1996.

Rolen picks up eighth Gold Glove

St. Louis -- Cincinnati third baseman Scott Rolen was announced Wednesday as a winner of his eighth Gold Glove when the National League defensive awards were released.

While it was the eighth Gold Glove overall for Rolen, it was his first since 2006. He previously won three Gold Gloves while with the Philadelphia Phillies (1998, 2000, '01) and four (2002, '03, '04, '06) when he played for St. Louis.

St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina and Philadelphia outfielder Shane Victorino each won their third consecutive Gold Glove. Other National League outfielders to win 2010 Gold Gloves were Houston's Michael Bourn, who also won last year, and first-time honoree Carlos Gonzalez of Colorado.

Stallone, Freeman set for Hollywood Awards

Hollywood -- Sylvester Stallone and Morgan Freeman are to be honored at the upcoming 14th annual Hollywood Film Festival and Hollywood Awards, Starz announced.

Stallone is to receive the Hollywood Career Achievement Award and Freeman and his producing partner, computer scientist Lori McCreary, will be recognized with the Hollywood Innovator Award.

Tom Hooper is also to be presented with the Hollywood Director Award at the ceremony Oct. 25 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Pujols, Bautista receive monthly awards

New York -- St. Louis first baseman Albert Pujols and Toronto outfielder Jose Bautista were named players of the month for their respective leagues Thursday.

Pujols was selected as National League Player of the Month for August after batting .379 during 26 games. He led the league with 11 homers, posted a .777 slugging percentage, scored 29 times and had 23 RBI.

He hit his 400th career homer during the month. He won the honor for the fifth time in his career.

Bautista was honored in the American League for his 12 homers, 24 RBI and 72 total bases. He had 18 extra-base hits and a slugging percentage of .724. Bautista has 43 homers for the season, which leads the majors.

Students get chance to design space house

Washington -- NASA has announced a summer contest for students to design and field-test an inflatable shelter for life in space or on other worlds.

The X-Hab or "eXploration Habitat" contest will see three awards of $48,000 go to university student teams producing the best loft-like inflatable space habitats that can be attached to a hard-shell NASA structure, SPACE.com reported Tuesday.

The three top entries will go head-to-head in an Arizona desert field test, with the winner receiving an additional $10,000.

NASA has produced prototypes of inflatable habitats in the past but now wants to engage and encourage students, SPACE.com said.

135 invited to be Oscar voters

Beverly Hills, Calif. -- Hollywood's Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Friday it is extending invitations to join the organization to 135 artists and executives.

"The work of these individuals has been appreciated by moviegoers all around the world," academy President Tom Sherak said in a statement. "The academy is proud to invite each and every one of them."

The list of 2010 invitees includes actors Tobin Bell, Vera Farmiga, Miguel Ferrer, James Gandolfini, Anna Kendrick, Mo'Nique, Carey Mulligan, Jeremy Renner, Ryan Reynolds, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Peter Riegert, Sam Robards, Saoirse Ronan, Zoe Saldana, Adam Sandler, Peter Sarsgaard, Gabourey Sidibe, Shaun Toub, Christoph Waltz and George Wyner.

NASA awards space network contract

Wahington -- NASA announced the award Tuesday of a Space Network ground segment sustainment project contract to General Dynamics C4 Systems of Scottsdale, Ariz.

The contract, with a potential value of about $642 million, including options, runs through June 2017.

The project is part of NASA's Space Network that provides the resources for global space-to-ground telecommunications and tracking coverage for low-Earth orbit and near-Earth robotic and human spaceflight missions.

The Space Network ground segment includes facilities and systems located at the White Sands Complex in New Mexico, the Remote Ground Terminal in Guam and the Space Network Expansion East in Maryland.

NASA picks 18 small-business projects

Washington -- NASA says it has selected 18 technology proposals for negotiation of Phase 2 contract awards in its Small Business Technology Transfer, or STTR, program.

Officials said the selected projects have a total value of approximately $11 million. The contracts will be awarded to 18 high technology firms that are partnering with 15 universities in 12 states.

Kanye West to perform at BET Awards show

New York -- Hip-hop star Kanye West is to perform at the BET Awards show in Los Angeles, marking his first major awards-show appearance since the 2009 MTV VMAs.

West was widely criticized for interrupting VMA winner Taylor Swift's acceptance speech to declare that Beyonce should have won the prize.

"While West received much backlash and criticism following the VMAs, BET decided to give the multifaceted performer a spot in music history during its 10-year anniversary special," BET said in a news release Wednesday. "Viewers can anticipate a dynamic comeback performance.
Newly added performances also include Ludacris, DJ Khaled, Rick Ross, Drake and many more."

Also slated to perform are T.I., Diddy-Dirty Money, Nicki Minaj and Trey Songz.

JetBlue Airways awarded highest honors in airline customer satisfaction

JetBlue Airways (Nasdaq: JBLU), hometown airline of New York, has been awarded the highest honor in airline customer satisfaction.

Honored by J.D. Power and Associates 2010 North America Airline Satisfaction Study(SM), the carrier has received the award for the fifth year in a row.

Also, it is the sixth consecutive customer satisfaction award that the airline has received from the J.D. Power and Associates.

Accepting the honor, Dave Barger, president and CEO of JetBlue Airways, said, “On behalf of JetBlue's 12,500 crewmembers, we humbly accept this recognition for the sixth consecutive year."
