Stosur reaches New Haven quarterfinals

New Haven, Conn. -- Australian Samantha Stosur outlasted Sara Errani in three sets Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals of Pilot Pen Tennis event.

Stosur, seeded second in the final hard-court tuneup for the U.S. Open, prevailed over the 23-year-old Italian 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4). The victory put Stosur in the quarterfinals or better in nine of her last 10 tournaments.

Also Tuesday, sixth-seeded Marion Bartoli barely got through to the second round, edging Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.

Bartoli goes on to face Aussie Anastasia Rodionova.

Aussie Stosur wins Japan Women's Open

Osaka, Oct. 18 -- Australian Samantha Stosur won the Japan Women's Open Sunday, her first singles championship on the WTA Tour.

Stosur, the No. 3 seed, posted a 7-5, 6-1 win over fourth-seeded Francesca Schiavone of Italy.

"I'm very, very pleased to win my first title after losing five previous finals," Stosur said. "My next goal is to reach the Top 10 for which I would need to play like today every day."

Stosur, who is 4-1 in matches against Schiavone, has been on 22 winning doubles teams on the tour. She is 1-10 in singles finals.
