Some Texas moms taking placentas home

Austin, Texas -- An Austin, Texas, hospital official says an increasing number of women are braving lengthy paperwork and fees to take their placentas home after giving birth.

Eileen Dunne, director of waste management for St. David's North Austin Medical Center, said placentas are considered medical waste under the Texas Administrative Code, so mothers who want to keep them have to file paperwork at a courthouse and pay fees of as much as $300.

Dunne told the Austin American-Statesman a growing number of applications to keep placentas have been crossing her desk.

"All of a sudden, it seems like one or two a month this year, which is definitively more than the one or two I'd see every couple of years," Dunne said.

The study by Andres Villarreal, an associate professor of sociology, was published in the October issue of the American Sociological Review.
