Braves obtain Uggla from Marlins

Atlanta -- The Atlanta Braves have acquired slugging all-star second baseman Dan Uggla from the Florida Marlins, the teams said Tuesday.

The Braves, in turn, surrendered infielder Omar Infante and pitcher Mike Dunn.

Uggla, 30, has been one of the game's top-hitting second basemen in his four years with the Marlins. He is the only second baseman ever to register four straight 30-homer seasons, batting .287 with 33 home runs and 105 RBI in 159 games last season.

Uggla is the Marlins' all-time home run leader with 154.

Gonzalez takes over Braves from Cox

Atlanta -- Fredi Gonzalez has been formally tapped to replace Bobby Cox as manager of the Atlanta Braves, the National League team said Wednesday.

Cox ended a 25-season tenure as the Braves' manager Monday when Atlanta was eliminated from the National League playoffs by the San Francisco Giants.

Gonzalez, 46, was the manager of the Florida Marlins from the beginning of the 2007 season until June 23 when he was fired. The Marlins were 87-75 under Gonzalez, who previously spent time on Cox's staff as a third base coach.

Cox, 69, had a 2,149-1,709 record as the Atlanta manager. He led the Braves from 1978-1981 and again from 1990-2010. Cox also had a four-season stint as the manager of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Braves seek to drop injured closer Wagner

Atlanta -- The Atlanta Braves indicated Sunday they are seeking to drop injured closer Billy Wagner from their post-season roster.

Wagner strained his oblique muscle in Friday's 5-4 Braves win over San Francisco in Game 2 of their best-of-five National League Division Series.

The Braves have asked permission from Major League Baseball to replace him with Takashi Saito, who had been out with a sore shoulder, for the remainder of the series.

Because Wagner has indicated he will retire at the end of the season, the durable closer has likely pitched his last major league game. He was fifth in the NL with 37 saves this season.
