MLB: Detroit 10, Minnesota 8

Detroit, Aug. 8: Miguel Cabrera and Alex Avila hit home runs during a six-run first inning Friday, and Detroit fought off a Minnesota comeback to down the Twins 10-8.

Cabrera hit a three-run homer in the opening inning, and Avila contributed a two-run blast in only the second game of his major league career.

Each team pounded out 15 hits, and the Tigers had to sweat out the victory despite building a 9-4 lead through five innings.

Minnesota scored twice in the ninth to get within two and had the potential tying run at the plate when Fernando Rodney ended the game by striking out Orlando Cabrera.

Armando Galarraga (6-10) lasted five innings to get the victory, giving up three runs on eight hits.

MLB: Texas 5, Detroit 2

Arlington, Texas July 27: Michael Young was 3-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored Monday to help the Texas Rangers beat the Detroit Tigers 5-2.

Hank Blalock hit a two-run double for the Rangers, who beat the Tigers for the first time since last September. Nelson Cruz had a solo homer and Elvis Andrus two doubles for Texas, which has won seven of its last eight games.

Winning pitcher Tommy Hunter (3-1) allowed one run on five hits in seven innings.

Hunter has allowed just three runs over his last four starts.

Curtis Granderson hit a solo homer for Detroit.

Armando Galarraga (5-9) gave up four runs on six hits in a seven-inning start.

MLB: Seattle 2, Detroit 1

Detroit, July 22: A two-run homer by Russell Branyan in the eighth inning Wednesday, one of just two hits for Seattle in the entire game, boosted the Mariners past Detroit 2-1.

Seattle won for the fourth time in five contests despite being shut down by Armando Galarraga for 7 1/3 innings.

Galarraga walked four, but the only hit he gave up was a fifth-inning single by Ryan Langerhans.

Jack Hannahan drew a walk to lead off the Seattle eighth and moved to second on a ground out by Ronny Cedeno. Bobby Seay (1-2) was called on to replace Galarraga and he got Ichiro Suzuki to hit a grounder to shortstop, on which Hannahan was thrown out at third.

Needing one more out to escape the inning, Seay served up a home run ball to Branyan on a 1-0 pitch.

MLB: Cleveland 5, Detroit 4

Detroit, July 11: Travis Hafner had two hits and two RBI Saturday to lead the Cleveland Indians to a 5-4 win over Detroit.

Detroit's Miguel Cabrera made things interesting by hitting a two-run homer off closer Kerry Wood with no outs in the bottom of the ninth.

Hafner's two-run single erased a 2-1 deficit with two outs in the bottom of the third. Asdrubal Cabrera had three hits and one RBI, Jhonny Peralta drove in a run and Luis Valbuena added two hits for the Indians, who had lost four of five.

Winner Carl Pavano (8-7) went eight innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Pavano has two straight victories following four-game winless streak.

Wood recorded his 12th save.

MLB: Detroit 5, Oakland 3

Oakland, Calif. July 1: Placido Polanco homered and Armando Galarraga picked up his second consecutive win in Detroit's 5-3 win over Oakland Tuesday.

Galarraga (5-7) held Oakland to two hits and a run over 6 1/3 innings while striking out five and walking six.

Mark Ellis hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth for the Athletics, who managed just five hits and lost for the sixth time in their last seven games. Gio Gonzalez (0-2) took the loss with three runs and seven hits in five innings.

Gonzalez got into trouble right off the bat by walking Curtis Granderson to lead off the game and then serving up Polanco's two-run homer.

MLB: Detroit 10, Milwaukee 4

Detroit, June 20: Marcus Thames hit two of Detroit's four homers Friday, both of them two-run shots, powering the Tigers past Milwaukee 10-4 in a game shortened by rain.

The contest was halted with one out in the bottom of the seventh after Thames had hit his second homer of the night. He also produced a blast in the first inning and Detroit got a solo shot from Miguel Cabrera in the third and a two-run homer from Curtis Granderson as part of a four-run fourth.

Armando Galarraga gave up four runs in four innings before the game went through its first rain delay of more than two hours. Zach Miner (4-1) came on after the delay and got the win by working 2 1/3 innings.

MLB: Pittsburgh 9, Detroit 3

Pittsburgh, June 13: A fourth-inning grand slam by Freddy Sanchez Saturday keyed the Pittsburgh Pirates' 9-3 inter-league win over the Detroit Tigers.

Sanchez's fifth homer this season gave Pittsburgh an 8-2 lead with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Jack Wilson had two runs, three hits and one RBI, and one of three hits for Adam LaRoche was a second-inning solo homer.

Andrew McCutchen knocked in two runs and Nyjer Morgan one for the Pirates, who have won three of four.

Winner Zack Duke (7-4) allowed three runs and six hits in eight innings.
