MLS: Real Salt Lake 3, Columbus 2

Columbus, Ohio -- Real Salt Lake got a late goal by Andy Williams and advanced in the Major League Soccer playoffs Thursday, upsetting defending champion Columbus 3-2.

Williams took a pass from Javier Morales and fired the game-winner through traffic in the 74th minute.

Real Salt Lake had gone into the match with a one-point lead in the home-and-home total goals series.

Morales and Robbie Finley scored the other goals for Real Salt Lake, which trailed 2-0 in the first half after Guillermo Barros Schelotto scored for the Crew in the first 35 minutes of the match.

Real Salt Lake will play the winner of the New England-Chicago series next week. New England has a one-goal advantage in that series.

MLS: Real Salt Lake 2, New York 0

Sandy, Utah, Oct. 15: Andy Williams broke a tie in the 80th minute Wednesday and Real Salt Lake improved its playoff chances by downing New York 2-0.

Salt Lake (10-11-7) moved past Toronto, D.C. United and FC Dallas with the victory and its 37 points leaves it just one point behind New England for the final MLS post-season berth.

New York, owner of the worst record in the league, has won just four times in 29 games.
