Andy Marte

MLB: Cleveland 9, Boston 1

Boston -- Andy Marte's three-run homer finished off a five-run seventh Wednesday that sent the Cleveland Indians cruising to a 9-1 victory over Boston.

Justin Masterson (4-10) gave up a homer by David Ortiz for Boston's only run and four Cleveland relievers combined to allow just two hits with six strikeouts over the final four innings.

Boston starter Jon Lester continued to struggle and center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, activated from the disabled list after being out for two months with fractured ribs, went hitless in five at bats as the leadoff man in the order.

The Indians built a 4-1 lead through six innings, thanks in part to a solo homer from Jason Nix, before breaking things open with their big seventh frame.

MLB: Cleveland 8, Detroit 2

Cleveland -- Andy Marte put Cleveland ahead with a two-run homer in the fourth Friday and the Indians went on to down Detroit 8-2.

Marte broke a 2-2 tie with his third home run of the year and Austin Kearns added a two-run shot during a four-run sixth inning that broke the game open.

Cleveland had lost five out of six games heading into the All-Star break.

Jake Westbrook (6-5) survived 5 2/3 innings to get the victory, giving up two runs on five hits and striking out five.

Detroit lost its second in a row following a five-game winning streak.

MLB: Cleveland 5, Baltimore 4

Baltimore, Aug. 27: Andy Marte, his team down to its final strike in the ninth inning, came through with a two-run homer Thursday that gave Cleveland a 5-4 win over Baltimore.

The Orioles seemed on their way to a 4-3 victory when closer Jim Johnson (3-5) retired the first two batters in the ninth on grounders. Matt LaPorta, however, kept the inning alive with a single to center at the end of a seven-pitch at bat.

Marte, who spent most of this year with Class AAA Columbus, then worked Johnson for a 3-2 count before hitting his second home run of the season.
