Big second set carries Petkovic in Turkey

Istanbul -- Andrea Petkovic lost only five points in her final set Friday in locking up the final semifinal position at the Istanbul Cup tennis tournament in Turkey.

Petkovic, seeded sixth, defeated Elena Baltacha 6-4, 6-0. She won 24 of the 29 points needed to decide the second set after a seesaw first set that had a total of five service breaks.

No 3-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova also advanced to Saturday's semifinals in straight sets, taking out Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 6-2 with six service breaks over nine games.

Elena Vesnina was a 7-5, 6-1 quarterfinals winner over Anastasia Rodionova, winning 61 percent of the points in the match. She dropped only 12 points in the second set.

Petkovic wins long match in Turkey

Istanbul, Turkey -- No. 6-seeded Andrea Petkovic survived a three-set test Wednesday and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Istanbul Cup tennis tournament in Turkey.

Petkovic, who lost just three games in her first-round match, was on the court nearly 3 hours in a 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 6-3 victory over Ekaterina Makarova. Petkovic won just three more points -- 119-116 -- overall than Makarova but took two key service breaks in the third set to advance.

Fifth-seeded Tsvetana Pironkova didn't make it out of her second-round match, losing to Anastasia Rodionova 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. Rodionova had six breaks while Pironkova managed three but all were in the second set.

Upset win advances Voegele in Istanbul Cup

Istanbul, Turkey -- Stefanie Voegele notched an early upset Monday in first-round play of the Istanbul Cup tennis tournament in Turkey.

Voegele ousted fourth-seeded Yaroslava Shvedova 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in a tight match. Voegele won just three more points (85-82) over the course of the match and was able to match Shvedova with three service breaks in forcing the second-set tie-breaker.

No. 6-seeded Andrea Petkovic breezed through her match Monday, knocking off Pemra Ozgen 6-2, 6-1 in 62 minutes. Petkovic piled up five breaks in eight Ozgen service games.

Petkovic, Bacsinszky win 1st-round matches

Bad Gastein, Austria -- Top seeds Andrea Petkovic and Timea Bacsinszky took decisive first-round victories Tuesday at the Gastein Ladies tennis tournament in Austria.

Petkovic, the No. 1 seed, handled Iveta Benesova 6-4, 6-0 despite dropping serve three times and having nine double faults. However, she won 65 percent of the points when Benesova served and piled up seven breaks in eight receiving games.

The second-seeded Bacsinszky defeated Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-1, 6-2 by winning 57 percent of the points when Groenefeld served. That included all 19 of the points when Groenefeld was on second serve.

Medina Garrigues in Istanbul quarterfinal

Istanbul, Turkey July 30: Third-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues rallied to defeat wild card Pemra Ozgen Thursday and earn a quarterfinal berth at the Istanbul Cup.

Medina Garrigues recorded a 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory that set up a quarterfinal meeting with fifth-seeded Vera Dushevina.

Andrea Petkovic, a surprise champion last week at Bad Gastein, kept her hot streak going with a 6-1, 6-0 blasting of Rossana de los Rios. Petkovic will take on No. 7 seed Olga Govortsova in the quarterfinals.

The other quarterfinal matches will see Lucie Hradecka playing Marta Domachowska and Timea Bacsinszky facing Urszula Radwanska.

Petkovic claims first WTA championship

Bad Gastein -- Andrea Petkovic of Germany won her first WTA title Sunday, defeating Romanian Ioana Raluca Olaru in the Bad Gastein tournament in Austria.

Petkovic's winning score was 6-2, 6-3.

The final was the first for the two young players -- Petkovic is 21 and Olaru 20 -- who had clashed twice previously in WTA events.

Olaru had beaten Petkovic in a tournament in France last month and Petkovic topped Olaru at Indian Wells, Calif., in March.
