Kudryavtseva wins first WTA title

Tashkent -- Alla Kudryavtseva topped Elena Vesnina in straight sets Saturday in winning the championship of the WTA's Tashkent Open in Uzbekistan.

Kudryavtseva defeated Vesnina 6-4, 6-4 in a tight match to collect her first WTA championship and a first-place check for $37,000. Vesnina, who took home $19,000 for a second-place finish, fell to 0-2 in WTA finals.

Kudryavtseva dropped serve once, faced only one other break-point situation and won two-thirds of the points on serve. She had three service breaks against Vesnina.

Kudryavtseva made a break in the seventh game of the first set stand up and the players traded breaks early in the second set before another seventh-game break gave the edge to Kudryavtseva.

Wozniak reaches Bell Challenge quarters

Quebec City, Sept. 18: Aleksandra Wozniak, seeking the first tournament triumph in her six-year career, reached the quarterfinals Thursday at the Bell Challenge.

Wozniak, seeded third, defeated Regina Kulikova 6-2, 7-5 to set up a quarterfinal meeting with Alla Kudryavtseva.

The only other seeded player in action Thursday was No. 4 Lucie Safarova, who was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Valerie Tetreault.

Qualifier Lilia Osterlog advanced with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 decision over Amra Sadikovic and
Bethanie Mattek-Sands defeated Vania King 6-3, 6-3.

Schiavone, Bammer advance in Prague

Prague, Czech Republic July 15: Francesca Schiavone and Sybille Bammer, the top two seeds in the Prague Open, earned quarterfinal berths Wednesday.

Schiavone, seeded No. 1, cruised past Polona Hercog 6-2, 6-2. Bammer was a 6-1, 6-1 victor over Alla Kudryavtseva.

Also advancing were Carla Suarez Navarro, who posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, and Lucie Hrdecka, who fought off Karolina Sprem 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Hradecka will meet Bammer in the quarterfinals Friday.

Third-seeded Iveta Benesova will play her second-round match Thursday.
