Cornet advances on upset in Austria

Austria -- Alize Cornet defeated top-seeded Andrea Petkovic in straight sets Thursday and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Gastein Ladies tennis tournament in Austria.

Cornet had three service breaks in the first set and added two more late in the second in claiming a 6-2, 7-5 win over Petkovic. Cornet won 61 percent of the points on serve despite seven double faults.

She'll go against Patricia Mayr in Friday's quarterfinals. Mayr also advanced in an upset, knocking off seventh-seeded Tathiana Garbin 6-3, 6-4 behind a pair of breaks in each set.

The other second-round matches Thursday saw Julia Goerges stop Mariya Koryttseva 6-2, 7-5; and Yvonne Meusburger edged by Lucie Hradecka 7-5, 7-5.

Cornet wins first-rounder in Austria

Bad Gastein, Austria -- Alize Cornet dropped just two games in collecting a first-round win Monday at the Gastein Ladies tennis tournament in Austria.

Cornet was on the court 56 minutes in a 6-2, 6-0 rout of Arantxa Rus. Cornet, who dropped serve in one game, had six service breaks as Rus won only 13 points in seven games on serve.

Simona Halep also won in straight sets but the other two matches Monday went three sets.

Halep topped Renata Voracova 7-5, 6-2 behind five breaks of serve.

Mariya Koryttseva outlasted Tatjana Malek 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, losing two points on serve in the third set.

Ioana Raluca Olaru rallied for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Kathrin Woerle. Olaru won 57 percent of the points after the first set.

Cornet, Ondraskova win in Hungarian upsets

Budapest, Hungary -- Alize Cornet and Zuzana Ondraskova posted upset victories Thursday in second-round action of the $220,000 GDF Suez Grand Prix tennis tournament in Hungary.

Cornet ousted third-seeded Timea Bacsinszky 6-0, 6-4, losing 16 points over eight service games. Cornet dropped only 15 points total in the first set.

Ondraskova defeated sixth-seeded Roberta Vinci 6-4, 6-0 in 59 minutes. She lost eight points -- two on serve -- in dominating the second set.

Also Thursday, second-seeded Alexandra Dulgheru finished off a 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 6-2 win over Anna Chakvetadze that was suspended Wednesday because of darkness before the third set began.

Cornet through to Gastein quarters

Bad Gastein, Austria -- No. 1-seed Alize Cornet rallied for a three-set win Thursday, a day when two other high seeds lost at the Gastein Ladies tennis tournament in Austria.

Cornet had her serve broken three times in the opening set before she came back for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over local favorite Patricia Mayr. Cornet was on the attack more after the first set and piled up seven service breaks taking the second-round match.

She advanced to Friday's quarterfinals against Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, who was a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Nuria Llagostera Vives in her Thursday match.
