Tight end Alex Smith signs with Browns

Berea, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns Wednesday signed veteran free agent tight end Alex Smith to a one-year contract.

Smith, a five-year veteran, had three catches for 25 yards last season for the Philadelphia Eagles. A third-round pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, he spent the previous four seasons with Tampa Bay, where he had 132 catches for 1,277 yards and 11 touchdowns in 74 games.

The Browns waived tight end Troy Wagner and wide receiver Aaron Valentin, both signed as undrafted rookies.

NFL: San Francisco 20, Detroit 6

SanAN Francisco -- Alex Smith threw a touchdown pass among 230 yards Sunday, leading the San Francisco 49ers to a 20-6 win over the Detroit Lions.

Overall, he completed 20-of-31 passes, with a 2-yard, third-quarter touchdown pass to Vernon Davis.

Frank Gore scored once on 28 carries for 71 yards and added four catches for 81 yards.

Ricky Schmitt kicked two first-half field goals and Michael Crabtree caught four passes for 68 yards for the 49ers (7-8), who have won two of three.

Detroit's only points came on first- and fourth-quarter field goals by Jason Hanson.
Drew Stanton, making his first career start, completed 11-of-21 passes for 130 yards, three interceptions and a lost fumble.

NFL: Tennessee 34, San Francisco 27

San Francisco -- NFL rushing leader Chris Johnson ran for two touchdowns and Tennessee used a 17-point fourth quarter Sunday to down the San Francisco 49ers 34-27.

Johnson racked up 135 yards, including TD runs of 1 and 2 yards, in the second straight win for the Titans (2-6).

Courtland Finnegan intercepted a pass and ran 39 yards for a late touchdown and quarterback Vince Young ran 7 yards for a touchdown and completed 12-of-19 passes for 172 yards for the Titans.

Alex Smith threw 12- and 3-yard touchdown passes to Jason Hill and Frank Gore scored on a 3-yard run for San Francisco (3-5.)

Gore gained 83 yards on 15 carries and caught seven passes for 75 yards and Vernon Davis had 10 receptions for 102 yards.

Smith to start at quarterback for 49ers

San Francisco -- San Francisco 49ers Coach Mike Singletary said Monday Alex Smith will start at quarterback, replacing Shaun Hill.

San Francisco plays at Indianapolis Sunday.

"We wanted to make the decision based on who I feel gives us the best chance to win," Singletary said.

In the 49ers last game, Sunday against Houston, Hill started but was replaced by Smith in the second half. Smith threw three touchdown passes, bringing the 49ers back from a 21-point deficit before they lost 24-21.

Hill led the team to three wins but lost his job after back-to-back losses, with a passer rating of 79.6.

Eagles switch out tight ends.

Philadelphia -- The Philadelphia Eagles Tuesday agreed to a one-year contract with tight end Alex Smith, releasing tight end Tony Curtis to make room on their 53-man roster.

Smith had been cut loose Saturday by New England, which had given Tampa Bay a fifth-round pick in the off-season to get him. In his fifth NFL season, Smith has 129 receptions for 1,252 yards and 11 touchdowns in 58 career games.

Curtis played for Dallas last season but the Cowboys released him in the off-season. He signed with Kansas City but the Chiefs cast him of last month. In 36 career games with Dallas, Curtis had 11 receptions for 50 yards and three touchdowns. The three scores came on his only three catches in 2007.
