Alex Romero

MLB: Arizona 14, Houston 7

Phoenix, Aug. 29: Alex Romero finished off a seven-run third inning with a three-run homer Friday to send Arizona coasting to a 14-7 win over Houston.

Romero's home run was the first of the year for Romero and the second of his major-league career. He has spent most of this season with Class AAA Reno.

The Diamondbacks pounded out 16 hits in the slugfest.

Arizona sent 11 men to the plate in its big third inning, and the first seven reached base.

Ryan Roberts opened the inning with a walk off Yorman Bazardo (0-1), went to second on a single by Justin Upton and scored on a base hit by Mark Reynolds.

Miguel Montero then doubled home Upton, and Gerardo Parra's double drove in Reynolds and Montero.

MLB: Houston 1, Arizona 0

Houston, Aug. 21: Roy Oswalt allowed three hits over seven innings Friday and teamed with two relievers in a shutout, bringing Houston a 1-0 decision over Arizona.

The Diamondbacks opened a 10-game, four-city trip by losing their sixth in a row.

Oswalt (7-4) ended a steak of four straight no-decisions with a 100-pitch effort.

He struck out two and did not walk a batter.

He gave up singles to Trent Oeltjen and Alex Romero to start the third, but escaped that trouble and then allowed only one other hit through the seventh.

LaTroy Hawkins worked a perfect eighth and Jose Valverde survived a two-out single in the ninth to grab his 19th save.

MLB: Philadelphia 8, Arizona 1

Philadelphia, Aug. 19: Jayson Werth hit two solo homers, and Cliff Lee pitched a complete game two-hitter Wednesday in Philadelphia's 8-1 win over Arizona.

Werth had three of Philadelphia's 12 hits, and his homers, in the fifth and the seventh, gave him 27 this season.

Ryan Howard hit his 31st, a three-run shot in the fifth.

Chase Utley hit a two-run, third-inning homer for the Phillies, who can cap a three-game sweep with a win Thursday.

Lee is 4-0 since joining the Phillies in a trade with Cleveland last month.

He surrendered a run and two hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts.

Arizona's run scored on Stephen Drew's fourth-inning sacrifice fly.

MLB: Arizona 6, New York Mets 2

Phoenix, Aug. 12: Gerardo Parra and Alex Romero had two RBI each and Max Scherzer struck out eight in Arizona's 6-2 win over the struggling New York Mets Tuesday.

Scherzer (7-6) notched the win with 6 2/3 innings in which he allowed two runs on eight hits and fanned eight.

Jeff Francoeur had a leadoff home run in the second inning for the Mets, who lost for the eighth time in their last 10 games.

Livan Hernandez (7-7) lasted only four innings in the start, giving up five runs on six hits and three walks. He struck out five.

Francoeur's homer tied the game 1-1 but the Diamondbacks scored three times in the third to take a 4-1 lead. Romero had a two-run single in the frame.

MLB: Arizona 11, Pittsburgh 6

Pittsburgh, Aug. 6: Alex Romero touched off a five-run 12th inning with a two-run double Thursday, lifting Arizona to an 11-6 victory over Pittsburgh.

The Diamondbacks swept the three-game series and have won five in a row.

Arizona rallied from a three-run deficit in the late innings, then outlasted the Pirates despite wasting scoring chances in the 10th and 11th. The Diamondbacks put their lead-off batter on in the 10th and had the bases loaded with just one away in the 11th without scoring.

Pittsburgh also had runners on first and second with nobody out in the 11th but failed to come up with the key hit that would have won the game.

MLB: Arizona 4, Pittsburgh 3

Pittsburgh, Aug. 5: Stephen Drew put Arizona in front with a two-run single in the eighth Wednesday, helping the Diamondbacks rally to a 4-3 win over Pittsburgh.

The Pirates took a 3-1 lead into the eighth but Arizona jumped in front thanks in large part to a throwing error by Pittsburgh reliever Joel Hanrahan.

Hanrahan (1-4) came on with the bases empty and one out in the eighth and immediately walked Ryan Roberts, who had hit a solo homer in the sixth. Chad Tracy then bounced one back to Hanrahan, whose wild throw put runners on first and second.
