Washington -- Mikhail Grabovski ignited a three-goal third-period outburst and got the shootout winner Monday in the Toronto Maple Leafs' 5-4 victory over Washington.
Trailing 4-1 entering the final frame, the Leafs exploded for three goals, beginning with Grabovski's tally 4:16 into the period. Tim Brent made it 4-3 and Clarke MacArthur scored the second of his two goals with 1:24 remaining, tying the game on a close-in one-timer off a feed from Grabovski.
Then, after a scoreless overtime, the German center got the only goal of the shootout to complete the comeback for Toronto, which got 32 saves from Jonas Gustavsson.
Mathieu Perreault scored twice and Alex Ovechkin and Mike Knuble each added a goal for Washington.

Pittsburgh -- Alex Ovechkin netted a pair of third-period goals Tuesday, boosting the Washington Capitals to a 6-3 win over Pittsburgh.
Alexander Semin, Tomas Fleischmann, Matt Bradley and Mike Knuble also scored while Semyon Varlamov made 26 saves in Washington's fourth straight win.
The Capitals will finish with the NHL's best regular-season record and home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs.
Jordan Leopold's goal less than a minute into the final period narrowed the Caps' lead to 4-3, but Ovechkin responded 2 minutes later on a power play to put Washington comfortably ahead.

New York-- Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin has been suspended two games without pay for his hit on Chicago's Brian Campbell, NHL officials said Monday.
League officials called the play on the Blackhawks' defenseman during Sunday's 4-3 Washington win "a reckless hit." In the first-period incident, Campbell skated with the puck into his own end and Ovechkin shoved him from behind into the end boards.
Ovechkin received a major penalty and game misconduct. Campbell broke his collarbone on the play and will miss the remainder of the regular season, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Vancouver -- Alex Ovechkin and Danis Zaripov both had two goals Tuesday and Russia coasted to an 8-2 Olympic hockey victory over Latvia.
The Russians, who reached the semifinals of the 2006 Olympic tournament without winning a medal, took 19 shots in the first period alone and scored the game's first four goals.
Ovechkin, the NHL goal-scoring leader gave Russia a 3-0 advantage by scoring with 35 seconds left in the opening period and then tallied the second in a string of four goals Russia produced in the span of 2:36 early in the second stanza.
Russia and Latvia are playing in Group B at the Olympics, as are Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

Newark, N.J. -- New Jersey's Nicklas Bergfors scored twice on power plays Wednesday and the Devils claimed a 3-2 win over Washington, which played without star Alex Ovechkin.
Both of Bergfors' goals came in the third period. Brian Rolston recorded the other goal for New Jersey, which has won three straight games and six of seven.
Devils goalie Martin Brodeur blocked 26 shots.
Tyler Sloan and Tomas Fleischmann scored for the Caps and Semyon Varlamov made 29 saves.
Ovechkin, Washington's high-scoring left wing, is on week-to-week status with an upper body strain suffered earlier in the week.

Washington -- Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin, injured in a game against Columbus, is on week-to-week status, team officials said Monday.
The NHL's leading scorer suffered an upper-body strain during a game against Columbus, a team report said.
Ovechkin and Coach Bruce Boudreau had initially indicated the all-star player's status was day-to-day.
"I can't tell you how I got hurt," Ovechkin said after the Caps' 5-4 overtime loss to the Blue Jackets Sunday.
He left the ice in the second period and seemed to be favoring his left shoulder.
The left winger from Russia is the NHL scoring leader with 14 goals and 23 points in 14 games. He took only one shot before leaving the Columbus game.

Atlanta -- Alex Ovechkin scored two first-period goals Thursday and the Washington Capitals fought off a late comeback to down Atlanta 4-3.
It was Washington's sixth straight victory and kept the Capitals seven points in front in the Northeast Division.
Ovechkin, who has scored twice in four of the last six games, raised his season goal total to 13. After leading the league in goals each of the last two seasons, Ovechkin began the night on top of the list again.
Washington took a 3-0 lead into the third period, but Atlanta closed within one on scores by Zach Bogosian and Todd White -- the second of those coming with 2:23 to play.

The Capitals ended a four-game losing streak that came on the heels of two consecutive victories to open the season.
The win was tempered by the loss of goaltender Jose Theodore to an undisclosed injury. Theodore played the first period, giving up one goal on 13 shots, but was not on the ice at the start of the second. Semyon Varlamov replaced Theodore and stopped all 15 shots over the remainder of the contest.
Washington defeated San Jose for the first time in 12 tries, a stretch of games played over 10 years.

Philadelia, Oct. 6: Danny Briere scored with 1:08 left in overtime Tuesday to give the Philadelphia Flyers a 6-5 victory over the Washington Capitals.
Mike Richards posted his second career hat trick for the Flyers, who have won the first three games in a season for the first time since 1998-99.
Matt Carle had four assists, Scott Hartnell made the game-tying score late in regulation and Ray Emery made 31 stops for Philadelphia.
Alexander Semin and Alex Ovechkin each scored two goals for the Capitals, who failed in their bid to start a season with three consecutive wins for the second time in three years.
Jose Theodore played nearly 30 minutes and suffered the loss after allowing two goals on 16 shots.

Washington -- Washington's Alex Ovechkin, who had six points in his first two games this season, is the NHL's first star in the league's player of the week voting.
The NHL selects three stars of the week each Monday. Ovechkin took the "first star" award with Colorado goaltender Craig Anderson and St. Louis center Keith Tkachuk also honored.
Ovechkin had had two goals and an assist in the Capitals' season opener against
Boston and came back with a goal and two assists in Washington's first home game of the season. He is coming off season in which he was voted the NHL's most valuable player.

Boston, Oct. 1 -- Two-time defending league MVP Alex Ovechkin had two goals and an assist Thursday in carrying Washington to a season-opening 4-1 win over Boston.
It the was the first regular-season game completed among the four that were on the NHL schedule Thursday.
Ovechkin led the NHL with 56 goals last season and he began the 2009-10 campaign by assisting on a power-play score by Brooks Laich just 2:45 into the new campaign.
The Capitals took a 2-0 lead in the second period on Ovechkin's first goal. Laich and Ovechkin scored during the opening two minutes of the third period.
Patrice Bergeron produced Boston's only goal midway through the third. Jose Theodore made 19 saves to get the win. Tim Thomas allowed four goals on 34 shots.
